Local girl saves owl By Jennifer Petty Express Writer Kristina Powell was driving driv-ing home from Ashley National Forest with her grandfather, Ron Grider, when she spotted a Great Horned Owl stuck in a barbed wire fence on Taylor Mountain Road on August 14. "I saw it hanging there in the wire, and I thought it was dead," said Powell, "but we went back and we saw it moving its head." "We were on a mission from God to save the bird," said Grider. After Powell and Grider found the bird, they drove to Steinaker where they told Mike Murray, the head ranger rang-er at the reservoir, about the bird. Murray then called the Division of Wildlife Resources to report the incident. Roger Schneidervin was called to the scene where he used wire cutters cut-ters to free the bird. "Grider and Powell were just great. They called from Steinaker then drove back out and met me at the fence." Schneidervin said when he arrived, the bird was very calm. It's estimated that the bird was probably trapped the night before. Fortunately, there was a little juniper tree that might have given the bird some shade during some of the day. The bird was not panting or showing show-ing distress when Schneidervin arrived. "I couldn't figure out how it got caught," said Schneidervin, "There were just one or two drops of blood, which was a great sign." After the owl was freed, it was taken to Jean Cushing for rehabilitation. "One barb had pierced the skin on one side, but not on the other side. The bird was very fortunate," said Schneidervin. Had it not been for Powell and Grider, the bird almost certainly would have died. The owl will probably be released sometime this week. Curves The power to amaze yourself.
