" ' ' igs. .... . .s "V JT- A.A L V k fire at the Flaming Gorge Ranger District southeast of Browne Lake burns 68 acres. twm fire burns 68 acres i I The Carter 2 Fire was discovered dis-covered on Wednesday, June 28, at approximately 10:30 a.m., and is located on the Flaming Gorge Ranger District southeast south-east of Browne Lake. The fire is currently 68 acres and resources resourc-es at the fire include four fire crews, two helicopters, and two engines. No structures are threatened and the fire is mostly most-ly contained. For public safety, the road to Browne Lake Campground has been temporarily closed, but plans are to re-open the road by 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 1, if the weather permits. Because the Browne Lake Campground is being used as the base camp for the fire fighters and other resources, the public should be aware that there may be noise in this area. Conditions on the Forest are very dry and no fireworks fire-works are allowed. Notes from the Uintah Mountain Club :ipp;,;.::;-:::.;;. m i! 3 irst National Monument is Devil's Tower. 100th Birthday for the Antiquities Act The 1906 Antiquities Act, ("An Act for the Preservation of American Antiquities,") was signed into law June 8, 1906, by President Theodore Roosevelt. Thus, 100 years ago, it was a Republican president that created cre-ated one of our most powerful power-ful conservation tools. Among other things, this act allows any president to set aside exceptional exception-al areas of public (not private) land as national monuments, which are then managed by the National Park Service. Roosevelt immediately proclaimed Devils Tower in Wyoming as the nation's first national monument. (This striking rock formation became familiar to all when it later starred in Steven Spielberg's movie, "Close Encounters of the Third Kind".) In 1908, Roosevelt went on to give the Grand Canyon status as a national monument. The Grand Canyon later was redesignated re-designated by Congress as a national park. This pattern has happened again and again; a fast-acting president preserves an exceptional area as a monument; monu-ment; much later, a slower-moving slower-moving Congress confirms the decision by upgrading it to a park. What do Bryce Canyon, Arches, Capitol Reef, and Zion have in common? They are all national parks that started out as national monuments under the Antiquities Act. Of course, many of the newly-designated newly-designated monuments are not considered significant enough to be parks, and remain monuments. monu-ments. Cedar Breaks, Natural Bridges, and Timpanogos Cave are examples. These areas are still managed by the National Park Service for their exceptional excep-tional beauty, and are protected in the same ways as a national park. They are usually less-visited, less-visited, but no less worthy of a visit. On August 17, 1909, near Vernal, paleontologist Earl Douglass discovered a big pile of dinosaur bones. About 350 tons of fossils were eventually excavated by Douglass and his crew, but there were many more bones remaining. At one point, the scientist proposed that an exhibit of the remaining bones, left in place, would be a compelling scene for visitors. Democratic President Woodrow Wilson took him up on this idea, and in 1915, eighty acres of the land surrounding the dinosaur dig was proclaimed by the president as "Dinosaur National Monument". In 1938, the other Roosevelt, Franklin Delano, greatly expanded the monument to include the beautiful beau-tiful canyons of the Green and Yampa Rivers. Last year, 361,315 people traveled to our remote corner of the nation to visit Dinosaur. They drove, walked, rafted, and admired the bones. More than anything else,. Dinosaur National Monument has put Vernal, Utah, on the map. It's a good thing for us, and particularly particu-larly for our elected officials, to keep in mind.
