Last month, 22 first year Latin students at Uintah High School tackled these and other difficult questions when they competed in the National Latin seX. "National Latin Exam is a misnomer," said Wes Baden, the students' teacher. He pointed point-ed out that the annual exam is taken by some 55,000 students, not only in all 50 states but 14 foreign countries, including England, France, Japan and China. One-quarter One-quarter covered Roman culture, history and mythology. The remainder of the exam called on the students to translate a story written in Latin and then answer specific questions about it. Uintah High School finished first in Utah, with the highest average score and the highest percentage of students winning awards. Overall, 82 percent of students taking the exam (18 of 22) won awards. "This is an extremely high percentage," said Baden. He stated that half of the 55,000 students who take the test fail to win any kind of award at all. Senior Aaron Wood scored a perfect exam. He was one of only about 400 students, worldwide, world-wide, to do so.
