Mini-Envirothon challenges students from Uintah Basin TriCounty to hold hearings The TriCounty Health Department will hold public pub-lic hearings regarding the Policies and Procedures for Indoor Air Quality at Indoor Events. A copy of the Policies and Procedures can be obtained at the TriCounty Health Department offices at 281 East 200 North, Roosevelt or 147 East Main, Vernal. Hearings are scheduled for Wednesday, May 11 at 6 p.m. at the Daggett County Court, Commissioner's Chambers, 95 North 1st West, Daggett, Utah; Thursday, May 12 at 6 p.m. at the Environmental Health Office of TriCounty Health Department (bottom floor), 147 East Main, Vernal, Utah; Friday, May 13 at 6 p.m. at the Environmental Health Office of TriCounty Health Department (downstairs), 281 East 200 North, Roosevelt, Utah. The Uintah High School AP Biology class dominated the 2005 Mini-Envirothon held at LC Ranch in Altamont. Besides taking the Overall Team honors, hon-ors, Quayle Chew excelled in Soils, Lance Pflieger had high score in Wildlife and Jay Houtz aced the Water test. Mini-Envirothon is an annual annu-al competition for high school students studying forestry, soils, aquatics and wildlife. Each year there is a rotating subject and the 2005 Envirothon topic was Managing Cultural Landscapes. Twenty-seven students from Union, Uintah and Manila high schools pitted their knowledge against one another. Delores Simon, Ashley National Forest, showed students stu-dents how to measure the width and height of a tree. Jennifer Corser, Tri-County Health, had students sample soils, while Byron Loosle, Ashley National Forest used the Sweat Ranch as an example of a cultural landscape. Anne Stevenson, LC Ranch, provided lunch for the students stu-dents before they were off to aquatics. Troy Cooper, Utah State University Extension and Darrell Gillman, Soil Conservation District had students testing water and catching insects to determine water quality at the LC Ranch pond. Jim Spencer and Jim Brown, National Resource Conservation Services (NRCS) challenged the students to explore wildlife habitat. The Mini-Envirothon was sponsored by Daggett County Soil Conservation District Central Utah Water Conservancy District Utah Division of Water Resources and Farm Services Agency while Dinosaurland Resource Conservation & Development coordinated the event. Students took multiple choice tests graded by Ina Nielson of Union High School and Heather Jenkins of Duchesne Soil Conservation District to determine winners. Tom Elder is the AP biology biol-ogy instructor at Uintah High School. In two previous years, the Uintah team has been Utah Champs for the statewide Envirothon competition. State champions earn a trip to the nationwide Envirothon competition. compe-tition. The statewide competition competi-tion will be held in Cedar City at the end of April. IP j Individual category winners in the Mini-Envirothon are Delia Arthur in Forestry from Union High School, Michael Swartz in Cultural Landscapes from Manila High School.
