Show Uintah swimmers compete at State Championship Vernal Exoress. Wednesday, February 9, 2005 Members of the Uintah High School swim team competed on Feb. 4-5 at the Utah State Swimming Championships. This year the event was held at the BYU Aquatic Facility in Provo. Competition was fierce among those that had previously previous-ly established times sufficiently fast enough for qualification into the meet. ."One of the greatest facets of Jhe meet was the degree of competition com-petition amongst the athletes," said Coach Don DeCamp. "Only the 'cream of the crop' athletes ath-letes from the twenty schools competing were in attendance. This seemed to promote the ideal championship work ethic, and as a result, every athlete seemed to dig deeper into themselves them-selves and give an explosive performance." 1 This attitude was especially Jioticeable among the Uintah Swimmers, as almost every swimmer established new personal records for themselves them-selves and their team. Senior Eric Caldwell re-established a new school record for the 100 Butterfly and the 100 Backstroke. Additional personal per-sonal records were established "by Courtney Stone, Jenni Gray, Becci Cook and Kirsten Bentley in the 200 Medley Eelay. In the boys 200 Medley .Relay were Eric Caldwell, Sean Kendall, Tyler Cook and Spencer Perry. In the 200 Freestyle was Courtney Stone. In the 50 Freestyle was Spencer Perry. Swimming the girls 100 Butterfly was Becci Cook, with Spencer Perry and Eric Caldwell competing in the boys Butterfly. Senior Sean Kendall represented Uintah in the 100 Freestyle. In the 200 Free Relay were Norma Kuhr, Nicole Wright, Kirsten Bentley and Jenni Gray. In the boys relay wre L.J. Heaton, Sterling Kendall, Tyler Cook and Langdon DeCamp. In the 100 Backstroke for the girls team was Courtney Stone. Representing the boys were Sean Kendall and Eric Caldwell. The 400 Freestyle Relay was represented by Jenni Gray, Norma Kuhr, Kirsten Bently and Courtney Stone for the girls, and Sean Kendall, Utes bounce back with two wins Courtney Stone takes 6th at State. Langdon DeCamp, Spencer Perry and Eric Caldwell for the boys. Swim Coach Don DeCamp stated that he was incredibly proud of the effort that his team put forth this year. "We are establishing our school swim team as a formidable formida-ble opponent and have gained the respect of every team in the state", said Coach DeCamp. He and Coach Heaton said they are anxious to see the team continue con-tinue to improve in the coming vears. The Lady Utes are now 13-4 overall and 7-1 in region play. Coaches Kenny Mohar and Shannon Flatt were at the helm Tuesday night when the Farmers made a visit to the Utes. Head Coach Shanon Johnson had to miss the game because of the previous ejection ejec-tion from the game at Judge. The Lady Utes didn't miss a beat. The team jumped out to a 19-7 half time lead, and played solid defense throughout, leading lead-ing to an easy win over the Farmers. Ten players scored for the Utes. Sophomore Nicole Brady led the team in scoring with a career high 10 points. She was also 4 for 4 from the free-throw free-throw line and grabbed 8 rebounds. Karissa White had 6 points, Amber Bunderson and Marissa McKeachnie had. 5 points each. Amber led the team in steals with 3. Lindsey Buckalew, Deanna Schroeder, and Krissy Hacking all had 4 points. Lindsey and Lacey Christensen had 3 points each and Sara Cushing rounded out the scoring with 2 and hauled down 11 rebounds. Park City entered Friday's game just one game behind Uintah in the Region 10 standings. stand-ings. A Miner win would have caused a three-way tie between Uintah, Wasatch and Park City for first place. Lindsey Christensen scored 9 of her game high 15 points in the first quarter as Uintah jumped out to a 15-7 first quarter lead and never looked back, defeating the Miners 53-41. Lacey Christensen added 11 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists for the Utes. Nicole Brady had 8 points and 5 rebounds. Krissy Hacking chipped in 6 points and 5 boards. Maggie Bartel had 5 points and 4 rebounds. Sara Cushing and Karissa White had 4 points each. Liz Bailey lead the Miners in scoring scor-ing with 14 points. "I thought the team played well in both games," said Coach Shannon Johnson. "Sometimes when it gets to this point in the season you see athletes playing play-ing tired and a little unfocused. I thought the team did a nice job battling those two things. Amber and Karissa found themselves in starting roles and both came in and did a good job. Our bench just played great. I thought Nicole, Maggie and Deanna Schroeder came off the bench and gave us a nice spark. Marissa McKeachnie made a couple of big baskets for us against Granite. I was also pleased with our post play. "We set a team goal to win the region title and we have a chance to achieve that goal next week. I'm happy for the players.
