On Jan. 26 the Vernal Middle School hosted the DARE graduation ceremony ceremo-ny of the sixth grade classes. Sgt. Rick Reynolds, Sgt. Pat Eden and Officer Holly Dick led sixth graders in DARE instruction. Mrs. Goodwin, Mr. Anderson and Mr. Bender cooperated, by giving up their classes to the instruction of the,DAREofficers. The classes covered the dangers of alcohol, drug and tobacco use. The officers offi-cers not only warned students of drug abuse consequences, but also built a rapport with students, which helped them to better understand the role of law enforcement in the community. com-munity. The class also teaches students how to handle situations in which they are faced with drugs, how to say "No," and the effects of drug abuse. For 10 weeks, each officer spent the entire school day with Vernal Middle School students. This was complete dedication on their part. Dedication came easy to these officers, because they realize that DARE makes a difference.. Officer Holly Dick -summed up the program with, .".This is,, about teaching kids the importance of staying drug-free." drug-free." At the end of the 10-week program, students were asked to write an essay on what they learned. Graduation from DARE for the sixth graders was more than just finishing the class. The students' teachers read their names as the officers gave each a certificate, cer-tificate, handshake and a few words of congratulations. Each certificate was a work in itself as they were individually written writ-ten by Carla White. After the students were graduated, grad-uated, the essay winners were announced and given their medals. The essay winners each took home a savings account or savings bond donated by Wells Fargo Bank, Zions Bank or Mountain America Credit Union. The ceremony concluded conclud-ed with cheering, stomping and proud teachers and parents. Photos were snapped and students stu-dents were off to their feast of pizza and Pepsi. Uintah Schools Foundation now accepting nominees for award for teaching excellence Uintah Schools Foundation Showalter Endowment Award for Excellence in Teaching recognizes outstanding teachers teach-ers in Uintah School District who have given extraordinary service to students. The recipient recipi-ent of this award will receive a cash award of $500 from Uintah Schools Foundation to be presented pre-sented at the Foundation's Annual Recognition Banquet, Feb. 23. Special Area Closure enacted on Forest Ashley National Forest Supervisor George Weldon signed a Special Area Closure Order on Feb. 1, 2005 to close all areas, roads and trails on the Rock Creek drainage of the Ashley National Forest due to avalanche danger. This Area Closure includes the main road into the Rock Creek area. This closure is intended to provide for public health and safety. Exemptions for this order are as follows: Western Heritage Museum displays work of Kim Hall The Vernal Western Heritage Museum will be displaying the work of artist Kim Hall from Roosevelt. Kim is a self taught painter and has been doing oil on canvas painting for over ten years. While running a wrecking wreck-ing yard in the Roosevelt area, Kim took a break from his hobby of oil painting until he suffered a major heart attack in 2001. While recuperating at home and after getting out of the wrecking yard business, Kim needed something to keep him busy. "Painting takes your mind off of everything else," said Kim.
