Digital photographers will be joining local "sharpshooters" June 10-13 for the first annual Uinta Mountain Digital Shootout, with large cash prize going to the top winners. A $1,000 grand prize will be given first place in the adult division, divi-sion, with second place pocketing $500 and third place earning $ 100. In the three youth divisions (9-12 grades, 6-8 grades and K-5 grades) first place w ill be $100, second $50 and third place $25. Prizes will be awarded during an artist's reception in Vernal, Sunday afternoon. June 13. Adult entries pay $35, w hile youth categories require no entry fee. Youth wishing to participate in the adult category will pay the $35 fee. Sign-in, registration and camera cam-era memory certification will be Thursday-June 10 from 8 to 10 a.m. at the new Field House of Natural History State Park Museum. 496 East Main in Vernal, or the Red Canyon Lodge in the Flaming Gorge National Recreation area. Photos may be taken as soon as the camera is certified. Saturday, June 12, digital slide shows will display the entries at both the new Field House of Natural History Museum in Vernal or the Red Canyon Lxlge in the Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area. Part of the Utah's Wildlife and Rivers Festival, the Digital Shootout is between photos taken during the contest with digital cameras in the Tri-County area of Daggett, Duchesne and L'intah counties of northeastern Utah, or within the boundaries of Dinosaur National monument, which includes a small tip of Colorado. River education seminar held in Jensen River guides leaned forward as rancher Scott Chew talked about his family settling in Pool Creek Canyon near Echo Park. The story of ranching was one of the sessions at a River Education Seminar held in Vernal on May 27. Over 30 river guides and private river runners attended the seminar at the Dinosaur Breu Haus. Each river guide comes in close contact with over 400yisitors to the Uintah Basin each summer. Guides are required to have safety, first aid and food handlers certification. certifica-tion. With the many requirements tor guides there is little time, funding fund-ing and opportunity for outfitters to teach the natural and human history his-tory along the rivers. This seminar provided the guides with information informa-tion about the resources they will encounter. Scott Chew and Tim Mantle told stories of their family history and ranching along the Yampa and Green Rivers. Other sessions covered cov-ered protection from West Nile Virus and other health hazards by Rae Paulson of the Tricounty Health Department, a history of the Ute People by Utah State University Professor John Barton, management and control of non-native non-native plants by Tamara Naumann of Dinosaur National Monument and the paleontology program at Dinosaur National Monument by Naples Splash Park opens May 29 The Naples Family Splash Park opened its doors to children and families of all ages for the 2004 summer season on Saturday, May 29 at 1 1 a.m. Summer hours will be 1 1 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday, for the duration of the summer. The entrance fee is still only $1 for children and parents, and season pass rates are offered at a lower cost than last year, at only $30 per family fam-ily or $15 per person. Season passes pass-es will only be available until June 19. They can be purchased at the Uintah Recreation District office in the Chamber of Commerce building, build-ing, 134 West Main, Suite 101. The Naples Splash Park opened two summers ago at the site of the old Naples water slide, across the street from Naples Elementary. The play area consists of a series of ground level fountains, water cannons, water arches and a water-spewing water-spewing serpent. It is based on a pad in the shape of a dinosaur footprint. foot-print. There is also a covered pav ilion il-ion to the side of the splash area, as well as dressing rooms and a snack bar.
