Continued from B1 the hard work Bowden, 12, said she had fun and plans to work toward her Silver Award. "It was a good mother-daughter thing," Bowden said, as the girls' mothers helped them throughout their project. Girl Scouts does much more for girls than teach service. According to Barb Guy, director of public relations for Girl Scouts of Utah, girls who join Girl Scouts benefit from participating in a group that consists only of girls. Guy said studies show that girls act differently when they are around boys but Girl Scouts is "all about letting them be who they are." The girls can relate to each other and can gain confidence from getting to know themselves and from learning to make their own decisions. "They're more able to determine their own fate," Guy said. They also learn to respect each other and form bonds with one another. Several Girl Scouts reported report-ed that their favorite thing they've learned from their partipation in the organization is how to respect others, oth-ers, including 6-year-old Paige Jenkins, a Brownie, who advised everyone to respect others by "being a sister to every Girl Scout." Guy also pointed out reasons for adults to volunteer as leaders for the organization. Women who have daughters involved in Girl Scouts can strengthen the bonds with their daughters through volunteering as a Girl Scout leader. Girls who get the opportunity to see their mothers as Girl Scout leaders in addition to the many other roles they play form a tighter relationship with their mothers moth-ers that last well into the girls' life, even into their 30s and 40s. "It's almost a guaranteed stronger bond," Guy noted. As for women who do not have daughters in Girl Scouts, there are benefits for them too. There has been a recent increase in college-age college-age women who are volunteering as leaders and Guy said the young leaders are very popular with the girls. As Girl Scout leaders, young women get the chance to impact the lives of the girls and serve as positive role models. Girl Scouts certainly helps build character in young girls, but the truth is simple: no girl would want to participate in something-that wasn't fun! Of course, Girl Scouts has plenty of fun activities year round. Each year local troops take a trip to Lagoon, the amusement park in Farmington. They also go on camping trips to the local mountains, moun-tains, weekend skiing trips, holiday parties and summer camp in Provo Canyon in addition to the activities they do at their regular meetings. In December, some local Girl Scouts traveled to Brigham Young University (BYU) in Provo to attend a two-day science camp with girls from all over Utah. The camp was sponsored by BYU's Society of Women Engineers. At the camp the girls met engineers, took apart clocks, made electricity and created a simple generator in addition to many other projects and activities. Adrienne Francisco, a 14-year-old Cadet who attended the camp, said all the scientific work "looked fun" and made her think about becoming an engineer, even if the thought only lasted a short while. McKala Donovan, a 7-year-old Brownie, said her favorite fun memory of Girl Scouts so far is about the corn maze in Bluebell. The Girl Scouts took a trip there as a fall activitiy and Donovan claimed she knew where the exit was and she was the only one who wasn't lost. "No one would listen to me," Donvan said. "I kept saying, it's over there!' and they'd say, 'No, no, it's over here!'" Many girls choose to attend summer sum-mer camp at either Trefoil Ranch or Camp Cloudrim, which are both in Provo Canyon. There are many different dif-ferent types of camps that last for different lengths of time, from a few days to an entire week. The camps are attended by Girl Scouts from all over Utah, so it gives the girls an opportunity to make new friends from other places. Katrina Orullian attended a camp at Camp Cloudrim for about a week. She said she had a lot of fun. They stayed in tents and made up their own nicknames for the duration dura-tion of the camp. She made new friends and learned new things. "They taught me how to swim and how to canoe and kayak," Orullian said. "It was a lot of fun." Girl Scouts is full of opportunities opportuni-ties for girls and women of all ages. Anyone interested in participating in Girl Scouts, either as a Girl Scout or as a leader, should contact their local troop or ask someone who is already involved. Getting involved can impact lives in ways you'd never imagine. A. |
