Show Vernal Express Wednesday. October 2, 20C2 1 1 Critter Corner Uffe cam) fo& bwrnovows some fiimrDes by Dr. Chad McGulra, DVU A few months after our new truck got out of the body shop (it was being repaired after being hit by a fence post) I got called out on a Sunday evening to deliver a calf. Usually this is one of my favorite jobs but in Indiana it can get to be a little frustrating. Most of the beef farmers in the area only raised cattle as a sideline. They usually had a full time job in town. They used the calves to supplement sup-plement their income and to keep the grass mowed in the junkyard. When Ma needed a new refrigerator refrigera-tor they w ould load up a couple of calves and head to the sale barn. They were not around all the time when the cows were getting ready to calve. Consequently, if a cow got into trouble and needed help there was no help till someone came home in the evenings. This meant that we delivered a fair amount of dead, often smelly calves. The other thing that we tended to see from our beef producers was that they usually did not have a barn or corrals cor-rals and it was a minor miracle if they had a head catch. We would have to go out into the pasture (junkyard) and rope the cow that had been trying to calf since Pa left for work that morning. The cows had a way of dodging between the old refrigerators that their ancestors ances-tors had helped purchase, making the process more than a little disheartening. dis-heartening. However, on this occasion my mother-to-be was caught in a little shed with a light and a bucket of warm water waiting for me. I cleaned her up and felt a little hoof move; within a short time we got the cutest black white-faced heifer calf out in the clean straw. We let mom go and she went right up to her new darling and started to lick her clean. (I bet you kids thought your mom was the only one that would do that thing with the saliva soaked napkin.) Great call, this is what being a veterinarian is all about. I cleaned up the tools got in the truck and headed for the next OB call about a 30 minute drive south. I cranked the radio up just a little bit to celebrate with Huey Lewis and the News just as the rain shower show-er started and the sun went down. All was right with the world; I didn't did-n't even get wet or dirty on that last call and the best part was we had a live calf. Life has a way of taking you from the highs to lows in short order. I went over the top of a little rise in the road just in time to see a dozen pairs of eyes glittering back at me in my headlights. I hit the brake and kept going straight because they had me surrounded and I could not steer around them. Wham! Wham! Wham! What was that? I stopped the truck in the middle of the road, jumped out to see what I hit and if there is anything any-thing I can do to help. I ran back to find two adult cows and one calf lying in the middle of the road, out cold and breathing hard. I ran back to the truck to grab the bottle of Dexamethazone to start treating for shock but by the time I got back to them it was too late. They had not lived long enough to even get a decent drug bill into them. To make matters worse, their friends that were with them at the time but were standing off to the side of the road looked at me as if to say, "What did you do that to Elsie and her baby and sister forr I don't know how many of you have stared into those big brown eyes of a cow before but they do have a way of making you feel guilty even when you have not done anything wrong. I found out latter that the herd had belonged to an older gentleman gentle-man who had died that week. Someone had been to the place earlier that day to look at the herd and had left the gates open. This was strike two on my almost brand new Dodge truck. Last week's fence post being strike one. I was out processing a bunch of cattle for one of our farmers. Most of the afternoon things had gone fairly well; the weather had been nice and it was a great bunch of people to be working with. One of the men had played a little semi pro ball in the Cincinnati Reds organization and he was tolling us stories while we worked. We finished, cleaned up the tools, hooked up the portable chute to the back of the almost new Dodge truck and headed for home. This farm was off in the boonies and it was a long way back to the main road. I was driving back on gravel country roads, pulling our portable chute and just enjoying the evening drive. I started around a blind curve when I saw this brown Explorer come up from the opposite way. 1 still don't know how fast he was going but there was not much time to react. I pulled the wheel hard to the right to go into the ditch. He must have cranked hard to his right but a little to hard because he fish-tailed fish-tailed into the driver side of my truck. "Wham! Bam! He bounced off my truck back into his lane and into the ditch where an assortment of small and large trees finally brought him to a stop. I stopped the CD .. Installing dimmers in areas where they make sense, like the dining room and bedroom, will help lower energy use. The amount you dim equals your energy saved. For example, dimming lights by 15 percent cuts energy consumption by 15 percent. Here are some other tips that can save you energy and money on lighting: Turn off extra lights and get in the habit of switching off the light every time you leave the room for more than a few minutes. When working at a desk use task lighting. Other lights in the room can then be turned off or dimmed. Clean light bulbs and fixtures. Dust can reduce light output by as much as 10 percent! When I got there it looked like the cab was on fire and the driver couldn't see. Fortunately, it was only the air bag that had gone off and it had irritated his eyes. That's about the time that I recognized the driver, the K-9 officer that we have worked with a number of times. Suddenly 1 got this sinking feeling in my stomach that ma) be, just maybe, none of his other police officer friends are going to believe that he was going too fast for the curve and ran into me. While we are waiting for the other police to show up 1 gave him a wet paper towel to soothe his eyes. Who knows, maybe a little kindness might smooth the way. That was about the time the farmer whom I had been working for drove by on his way to town. He stopped to see if there was anything that he could do and decided to slay around for awhile for moral support. When the other police arrived they looked at the accident scene and the gravel marks and wrote me up for being left of center on a gravel road. 1 am still trying to fig- I f I In early October Dexter & Dexter Attorneys at Lmw will be offering free echocardiograms in the Uintah Basin.
