Antler pickup season set Each year, a growing number of people flock to the hills in late winter win-ter and early spring to gather antlers dropped from elk, deer and moose. "Antler hunters" use the antlers for a variety of things such as decorating homes and bams, building furniture and rustic home furnishings or selling them for cash. The growing popularity of the activity and the cash value of the antlers have created a competitive atmosphere. Unfortunately, the competitiveness has fallen to questionable ques-tionable behavior at best and destructive or vandalous acts in the worst of cases. The problems were summed up by one individual as a "lapse of common sense" by a growing number of participants. Fences are being cut to allow motorized vehicle access to managed man-aged areas or to private lands. Big game animals that are still present on the winter and spring ranges where antlers are dropped are pursued pur-sued and harassed. During the early spring thaw and associated wet roads and ground, vehicle damage to roads and other resources has increased. When the Wildlife Board met in mid-November, they reviewed these issues and concerns and voted to establish a "gathering season" sea-son" for those interested in picking up shed big game antlers. The Wildlife Board is a politically appointed board with law and regulatory regu-latory authority over the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources and over the use of wildlife resources within the state. The new season allows shed antler gathering during May 1 and December 31 of each year. The regulation will be in effect for the coming year and is directed at reducing problems and the harassment harass-ment of big game animals during the spring of 2000.
