As many are caught up in the nostalgia nos-talgia of the past, the fever has caught hold in many different ways. The past is now being chronicled in books, magazines, the , media, Internet, lectures and every other available means. There have been many glimpses of history as the clock slowly winds down to the new millennium. Taking advantage at this time with the window of opportunity to look back whence we came serves many purposes. There is a spirit of not only learning where one came from and what the future will bring but also the development devel-opment of a deep sense of gratitude to all those who have come before who have made our lives better by their contributions and sacrifices. It is the desire of this newspaper to also jump on the bandwagon and take part in the passage of this century cen-tury into the new by looking back at our local history.. A series of articles dealing with specific aspects of the past will be published, pub-lished, one each week until the new year. There is no way the subjects can be covered in depth here because of the volume of information. informa-tion. For those who would like to know more there are a number of excellent books at the public library about Uintah County. In trying to decide which topic to cover first, we felt that this passage of time is different from earlier eras not only from the standpoint that it will take another 1,000 years to witness the start of a new millennium, millen-nium, but also with it the problems new technologies have brought us. In our modern age we have become so dependent on technology that the tick of the clock and the unknown threatens our very way of life and standard of living. The infamous Y2K problem we hear so much about is it truly a threat? We surely sure-ly shall see! Communications hits at the very heart of the Y2K problem affecting so many aspects of life from business, busi-ness, banking, and government to education and so much more. Communicating has always been a human need, which through the ages has adapted itself to the imagination imagi-nation as new and better ways of communicating have developed and evolved. Never before in the history of mankind has there been the degree of change and development that has taken place in inventions and technologies as has been witnessed wit-nessed in this past century. Looking back we see just how the development develop-ment of the different means of communications com-munications affected the settlement and growth of Uinta Basin. Mail In the mid-to-late 1870s when the first wave of settlers came to Ashley Valley, as it was then called, the area was quite remote and isolated. Many times people traveling in and out of the valley would take letters to be mailed or bring mail on their travels back. Gradually the mail service evolved through the willingness of different individuals who at different times saw the need and met it with their contributions. There were those w ho for a period of time accepted carrying the mail in and out of the area on a regular basis for a small fee. Carts, horses and mule teams were employed to get the mail -Si f U 1 HI- i 3 m ...m . 7... - - U"T ' - Early telephone switchboard and operator. rHHBH HHHH IHHfl BETf I David Bray, Owner Dr. Harvey Coe Hullinger sits at his early model typewriter an ancestor to computers. The Pony Express functioned for a short time until the development develop-ment of better roads for travel were opened into this remote part of the state. With the opening of stagecoach stage-coach lines to Vernal, in 1 888, they then became the means to transport mail on a more frequent and regular basis until 1904 when the Uintah Railway Company received the mail contract from the U.S. govem-mentMail govem-mentMail was shipped by rail to Dragon, located south of Vernal. It was then freighted to the different post office locations that had sprung up in the Uinta Basin since the first one had opened in 1 878 in the town of Ashley. In 1910 automobiles auto-mobiles replaced freight wagons and horse-drawn stages to transport mail and passengers between Dragon and Vernal. Not satisfied with the service, due to poor road conditions, the stage line was put back into use and other routes were tried from different locations again.
