Uintah County Library sponsor speakers The Uintah County Library in conjunction with the Utah Humanities Council is sponsoring three speakers this fall. The topic is The Mass Media and The Erosion of Social Trust and Civic Action. There is a growing consensus that American mass media are responsible responsi-ble for the decline in public participation partici-pation in self-government and community com-munity building. Do the media merit this critical rap? Do they promote pro-mote the erosion of the vision of the good society or do they merely cater to an audience already disconnected discon-nected from public life? Should they play a leading role in reviving civility and responsible citizenship? If so, how? The first speaker, Fred Fogo, is from the communications department depart-ment at Westminister College in Salt Lake City. Fogo will lead a discussion dis-cussion on TV and the erosion of commitment to the common good. Has televised public affairs been turned into a form of entertainment? entertain-ment? What effect does this have on citizenship, civic trust and participation? par-ticipation? What happens when people spend less lime solving social so-cial problems in public action and more time as individuals disconnected discon-nected from one another? Everyone is encouraged to attend and participate in this timely topic. There is no charge and the meeting ' will be held in the Uintah County Library at 7 p.m. on Oct 7.
