On this date, the 10th annual 22 Rifle Josie Shoot is slated as part of the Outlaw Trail Festival. The event is open to all women and girls; the only requirements are a hunter safety safe-ty "blue card" and a stock .22 caliber cal-iber rifle. According to Carole Jackson, the shooting competition will be held at a distance of 25 yards and consist of 5 shots from each of three shooting shoot-ing positions - standing, sitting and prone. No magnums, target rifles or handguns are allowed and shooters will supply their own .22 caliber long rifle shells. Two shooting divisions divi-sions (adult and junior) are organized orga-nized with both open site and scope site categories. The junior division is for those under 19 years of age. Junior shooters need a state-sanctioned hunter safety blue card and a parent or guardian must accompany those under the age of 16. Prizes will be awarded for the top three places in all categories. Jackson said that a Browning rifle will be awarded through a drawing for one lucky registered participant. Shooters will also be eligible for ample door prizes that will also be drawn. As an added incentive for early registration, a special porcelain porce-lain "Josie Doll" drawing will be conducted for those who enroll by June 23. Jackson is an avid shooter and is a volunteer hunter safety instructor. She said that there has been a "revolution" "rev-olution" across America. The change, she says has required men to "move over and make room for the thousands of women who will never again remain passive spectators specta-tors in the previously male-dominated world of sport shooting or hunting." Jackson also notes that there has been an "evolution" in the "male species" as well. She finds that more and more men are offering offer-ing support to women marksmen. Jackson said that the first competition compe-tition held in 1988 had only 15 contestants. con-testants. The following year, enrollment enroll-ment doubled and has continued to swell in each additional year. In 1997, the number had grown to 103 participants. "Women are very excited to have an event for women-only in an area where men have usually been the participants and the woman the supporter," sup-porter," Jackson said. She said that when she first coordinating the event, she received comments from men stating that they wanted to shoot as well. Men, she claims, are now more thoughtful supporters. "Many men call to register their wives, daughters or girlfriends and then share their shooting skills with them during practice," she added. She moved to Brown's Park with her family as a child of four. The circumstances cir-cumstances of her life brought her association with many of the colorful color-ful figures of the region and west. An attractive woman, she was reportedly re-portedly popular with men who included in-cluded the infamous outlaw, Butch Cassidy. She acquired the last name of Morris through marriage and in 1919 homesteaded on Cub Creek near Jensen where she remained into in-to her 80's. Her talents, her life, the times she lived in and association with notorious personalities have made her a popular local legend and folklore figure. Part of her reputation rested on her shooting abilities. "So, Josie was an excellent example of womanhood wom-anhood to honor when a woman's shooting competition was added to the Outlaw Trail Festival," Carole Jackson explained. Registration forms for the shooting shoot-ing event are available at Basin Sports, Dez Murray's, Western Park Museum, Uintah County Library, Designs by Lori or from Carole Jackson (435 - 781 - 2218). Registration forms and fees should be mailed to Carole L. Jackson at 2460 W. 1500 N., Vernal, 84078. Competition is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. and will continue until 2 p.m. at the Vernal Rod and Gun Club. Family Violma Pwaition Fund' CubsNatco DodgersService Insurance v |
