Show Vernal Express Wednesday, August 30, 1995 13 ' 4 News from Manila: by Clara Robinson 784-3463 ft wn i" -1 ! - f it- J 1 Dacia Whee er .Joyce Orton, Betty Griffin, Taunia Wheeler and Devoni Hill make up the mischievous cast of Nunsense. r 'Nunsense' is divine comedy Powerhouse Theatre is presenting "Nunsense," opening as a dinner show Sept. 1 and running the 2, 8, 9,15,16, 22, and 23. Nunsense is of: fcrcd as a "show only" on Sept. 4, 7, 11, and 18. "Nunsense" is a musical comedy about a Reverend Mother and a small group of nuns who return from a bingo game and find 52 nuns face down in their soup after Sister Julia served a bad batch of vichyssoise. Had the Reverend Mother not lost at bingo or purchased a Beta Max machine, they might have had enough money saved to give all 52 dead nuns a proper burial. However, they are short on funds...four nuns short, to be exact. So the Reverend Mother has decided decid-ed to put on a benefit show to raise enough money to bury them all. Musical numbers range from fast paced and technical, to simple and elegant, with a wonderful blend of voices that would by themselves, make this show a winner. "Nunsense" first ran in Vernal in 1993 when Nels Carlson, professor of Drama at USU, asked Gail Bcniley to direct the musical. Gail had been involved with many aspects as-pects of the theatre, but this was her first show as director. It was a smash. Gail Bentley passed away last year, and this running of "Nunsense" at the Powerhouse Theatre is in memory of this fine lady. la-dy. "We've kept the same blocking and set directions that Gail used in her production," says Taunia Wheeler. The original cast is back with the exception of Marci DeVillbis who played Sister Amnesia, a very sweet nun who lost her memory after af-ter a crucifix fell on her head. Dacia Taunia Wheeler listens intently as Joyce Orton shares a revelation. Wheeler adds her own essence to the part of Amnesia, Sister Mary Annette. The cast of characters include, Betty Griffin as the Reverend Mother, Sister Mary Regina.who is a feisty, Sophie Tucker-type who can't resist the spotlight. Joyce Orton as sister Mary Hubert, the mistress of novices and second in command, is always competing with Reverend Mother. Devoni Hill is Sister Robert Anne, a street wise character from Brooklyn and a constant source of aggravation for Reverend Mother. Taunia Wheeler is Sister Mary Leo, a novice who enters the convent con-vent with the firm desire to become the first nun ballerina. LABOR DRV GARAGE SIRIILE- September 4, 1995 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Old Truck Garage behind Sowards Residence 45 South 400 West Uernal, Utah Musicians are Luane Larson on the piano and Clay Hansen on the drums. Hansen was also in the original orig-inal USU production. Luane has played for Powerhouse since Joseph ' and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and has also al-so been involved with USU productions produc-tions in the past Luane also plays for the High School and Junior High school musicals. "We had a short rehearsal time and wanted to pull something together to-gether that was fun," says Taunia. '"Nunsense" was the best show for us to put together." Kevin Dickson, High School drama dra-ma teacher, is helping coach the players, to help them settle into their new characters in such a short time. Because of concurrent shows at the Powerhouse most of the actors ac-tors only have three days on the actual ac-tual set before a show, as compared with the three weeks performers usually have in preparing for a play. "We have some great talent here in Vernal and the basin," says Taunia. A playbill with the titles and dates of future shows may be obtained at the theatre.
