Help Your School Athletes Keep Up Their Energy By Ruth Ann Chambers (NU) - How can you help your kids put their best foot forward in sports? One way is by making sure they have the calories they need for plenty of energy. Experts say children should have an extra 200 to 450 calories for every hour they spend in athletic activities. ac-tivities. So if your kids are involved in school sports, encourage them to "refuel" with a healthy snack and fluids between classes and games. Juices are a good fluid choice because be-cause they quench thirst, provide carbohydrates for energy, are fat free and stay fresh for several hours without with-out refrigeration. And when they go to school in Rubbermaid Servin' Saver Litterless Juice Boxes, they're also kind to the environment because there are no bottles, cans or boxes to throw away. Some other healthy snacks to send from home include: Cut-up fruit. Raisins. Dry cereal, like granola or oat squares. They'll travel well in Rubbermaid Rubber-maid Munchettes containers. For a brochure with more nutrition nutri-tion tips and a coupon, send a self-addressed, self-addressed, stamped envelope to Ready, Set, Go!, Box 1568, Medina, OH 44258. If you have any Sports News call Eric Pye at the Vernal Express 789-3511 Triathlon continued from page 18 planned. The triathlon is a Tri-FcdUSA sanctioned race and will follow all rules and regulations. Therefore participants in the race will be responsible re-sponsible for their own gear, and no one will be allowed to give any kind of assistance. No one will be allowed inside the transition area other than the participants. Awards will be given in every age category (10 years) for both individual indi-vidual and team events. There will be an overall award given to the best male and female athlete along with a High School Division team award consisting of cash donated by the Uintah Foundation to the winning win-ning team's choice of program(s) at the high school (please designate which program(s) you would like the cash to be donated to on your registration form). Anyone compct- Vernal Express Wednesday, August 9, 1995 21 ing in the high school team division must be of high school age (grades 9-12). A late fee of $5 will be charged for all signups after July 29. There will be a prc-race meeting held at the Vernal Athletic Club Friday, Aug. 11 beginning at 6 p.m. with dinner and registration. There is a registration deadline following at 7:30 p.m. No Saturday registrations will be accepted. Friday's registration registra-tion (including late fee) will be $65 per team and $40 per individual. Tec shirts arc not included in the entry en-try packet but may be purchased for an additional $5. Contrary to past years, this year's event will take place almost entirely in the Steinaker area. Because of the new layout, the park will be closed for boat launching and beach use during the event. Spectators are welcome to join in the fun for a fee of $3 per vehicle. Pre-rcgistrauon for individuals is already over the total number of participants from last year (SO). Five teams have also pre-rcgislcrcd as of Tuesday including a high school team from Roosevelt. The course will not be officially marked out until Friday. If anyone is interested in going over the course, the swim will begin and end at the main boat ramp. The bike follows fol-lows Hwy. 191 to 500 North and out 500 North for about six miles past the high school before returning return-ing to the boat ramp. The run begins at the boat ramp and follows the trails north of the reservoir.
