Show Let's go to the Movies by Allen Hasson The Rocketeer l2 This Disney attempt to grab the "Raiders" crowd, is a period adventure adven-ture (1938) set in L.A., about a stunt pilot who finds a jetpack backpack stolen from Howard Hughes, and tries to elude FBI, nazis and organized orga-nized crime while using the suit to fight crime. Great music score by James Horner ("field Of Dreams," "Dances With Wolves"), fun flight scenes, good FX, too many characters charac-ters and confusion, and excessive violence (shooting, no blood). "Rocketeer" tries so hard to pander to action fans that it turns up weak in personal drama. PG: Violence, language. 104 min-. utes. What About Bob? In this classic comedy masterpiece, master-piece, one of the year's best films, Bill Murray ("Ghostbusters") is "Bob," the multi-phobic psychotic with a sense of humor and heart of gold; and Richard Dreyfuss ("Stakeout," "Once Around") is the psychiatrist he drives crazy with his persistence. The laughter and intensity carefully careful-ly and gradually escalate in this expertly ex-pertly crafted comedy from director Frank Oz ("Little Shop Of Horrors," "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels"). Uplifting and heartwarming moments mo-ments are plentiful too, as Murray's warmth wins over Dreyfuss family and colleagues. Intelligent and insightful in-sightful for (liscriminating adults, and good-natured fun for all ages from the Disney Touchstone subsidiary. sub-sidiary. Very mild PG: Brief vulgar language. lan-guage. 99 minutes. Madonna: Truth Or Dare We follow Madonna on a tour, and see both show numbers and backstage life with the crew, in this frekishly egomaniacal docu produced pro-duced by Madonna and directed by 24-year-old MTV-maker Alek Keshishian. So much of this ludicrous ludi-crous put-on is so decadent that we remained unimpressed by Madonna's "concern" for her helpers, her pre-performance "prayer circles," and her expressed desire to "please my father." Yes, she admits she can't sing or dance so well, and only wants to provoke. But a little bit of Madonna goes a long way with us, and watching this homely, angry entertainer revel in debauchery somehow even increases increas-es our distaste for her work. You may find this film quite entertaining if you're one who likes her music and outfits, and if you agree with the woman that each and every intimate inti-mate detail of her life is of earth-shaking earth-shaking importance. 4 . Very strong R: Very strong language lan-guage backstage, simulated sex and masturbation on stage, nudity, homosexuality, ho-mosexuality, vulgarity. 188 minutes. City Slickers "City Slickers" is a side-splitting comedy, a male-bonding story, a coming-of-middle-age drama, and an exciting western adventure. Billy Crystal's ("Harry And Sally") N.Y.C. pals talk him into a 2-week cattle-drive adventure that turns out to be a philosophy-of-sex clinic and a life-and-death struggle. Directed by Ron Underwood ("Tremors"). PG-13: Much talk about sex, some profanity and vulgarity. f '. Soap Dish l2 From director Michael Hoffman ("Some Girls") comes this sidesplitting side-splitting soap-opera parody about soap star Sally Field ("Places In The Heart," "Not Without My Daughter"), and the chaos that develops de-velops when her "niece" and former lover both show up as actors on the show. Kevin Kline is even funnier than he was in "Fish Called Wanda," and the climax is inspired. Light, adult, frothy diversion. PG-15: Profanity, sexual references. refer-ences. 95 minutes. Mannequin Two: On The Move Outrageously bland, tacky, tasteless, taste-less, unoriginal sequel to the outrageously outra-geously bland, tacky, tasteless 1987 flick about a Philadelphia department-store mannequin who comes to life and gets it on with a store employee. Stars William Ragsdale ("Fright Night") and Kristy Swanson ("Flowers In The Attic"). Meshach Taylor ("Designing Women") returns re-turns as "Hollywood Montrose," most blatantly feminine male homosexual homo-sexual in cinematic history; even the gays may find that a little bit of himher goes a long way. Same production quality and intellectual intel-lectual level as prequel; like musak, seemingly deliberately innocuous. PG: Vulgarity, homosexuality, sexual references. 93 minutes. The Perfect Weapon l2 In this- flimsy excuse for a series of admittedly well-staged slugfests and car wrecks, Jeff Speakman plays an L. A. karate dude on the trail of Oriental drug dealers who killed his friend. Every irritating, well-worn stereotype stereo-type and cliche is shamelessly used here, and to excellent effect; pic plays off well with increasingly involving, in-volving, gradually improving chase and fight scenes. This barbaric vengeflick is fun if you like that sort of thing. Rated R for violence; mercifully brief at 83 minutes. Thelma and Louise l2 "Thelma and Louise" is billed as an exciting chaseflick about liberated liberat-ed women on a lark and a crime spree. It's funny in spots, but basically basi-cally a tragedy, and a superbly stylish and atmospheric entertainment entertain-ment suggesting that (1) danger is aliveness, (2) men who abuse women wom-en must suffer the consequences, and (3) "you can't go home." Susan Sarandon ("Bull Durham") and Geena Davis ("The Fly," "Accidental Tourist") are marvelous as they take a holiday from boring and abusive situations at home in Arkansas, and lead police on a wild chase across Oklahoma after killing in self defense and robbing to buy gas and groceries. From the director' of "Alien," "Blade Runner" and "Presidio." Great musical score. Rated R: Brief violence, profanity and sex. 129 minutes. Backdraft l2 Director Ron "Opie" Howard ("Night Shift," "Cocoon," "Willow," "Parenthood") has a monster hit on his hands, a rousing tribute to Chicago's heroic firefighters, firefight-ers, with subplots about final competition, com-petition, arson, political corruption and romantic love. The all-star cast includes Kurt Russell, William Baldwin and Scott Glenn as firefighters, Robert De Niro as an investigator, Rebecca DeMornay and Jennifer Jason Leigh as firefighters' sweethearts, and Donald Sutherland vs a psychotic arsonist This is filmdom's first-ever definitive defini-tive and breathtaking tribute to smokeaters, impressively turning on the heroics, although at times making mak-ing them look, foolhardy with the most amazing and awful-looking explosions and backdrafts ever created cre-ated on film. Rated R for language. 136 minutes. Only The Lonely l2 Maureen O'Hara's return to the screen after a 21 -year absence is the best reason to see "Only The Lonely." She is Oscar-quality as Chicago cop John Candy's ("Uncle Buck") domineering mom, trying to ruin his perfectly lovely romance with shy mortician Ally Sheedy ("WarGames," "Short Circuit"). Anthony Quinn ("Zorba") is marvelous mar-velous as a warm-hearted, sensuous suitor to the cold, bigoted woman; and Jim Belushi ("K-9") does a supporting sup-porting role as Candy's police partner part-ner and sexual advisor. Lotsa tears, lotsa laughs in this entertaining flick from producer John Hughes ("Ferris Bueller," "Home Alone") and writer-director Chris Columbus ("Gremlins," "Home Alone"). PG-13: Profanity, out-of-character sexual situation with main characters. charac-ters. 104 minutes. Vernal Exprest Wednesday, June 19, 1991 21 Mr. & Mrs. Bridge stone Co,d A sad, sad movie so many opportunities op-portunities lost by the characters but exquisitely written, staged, shot, scored, acted and directed, from the "Room With A View" producer-director team of Merchant and Ivory. Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward arc a late 1930's Kansas City couple (he's a chauvinistic, arch-conservative attorney; she's naive, devoted, giddy) dealing with all the problems of kids, marriage, career and friends. At first the film seems a deliberate attempt at studied, tacky, period blandness, but the characters are ultra-involving, and what "Mr. & Mrs." lacks in entertainment and uplift, it makes up for in educational education-al value. The stiff-spined Midwestern attorney is against everything ev-erything he hasn't experienced. You've come a long way, baby. Mild PG-13: Adult situations 125 minutes. Brian Bosworth, the pro-football player who inspired five million never-to-be-forgotten haircuts, goes undercover to break up an Arkansas biker gang, in this fast-paced, well-, directed, vicious garbage offering generously gory and brutal fights,; cnases, crashes and mannings. The; good news is, Bosworth shapes up, as a passable, charismatic actor. ; Strong R: Violence, language. 95" minutes. Rich Girl Frighteningly decadent, madden-ingly madden-ingly tedious, cheezy B-pic about ; the daughter of an influential L.A. her own, first as a waitress, than as ; a rock singer. Poorly written, pro-; duced, acted, directed, pho-: tographed, with everybody miscast. ' Bummer. Rated R: Sex, nudity, language. ; 96 minutes. Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken Beautifully photographed, gentle, slow-moving, true story of Sonora Carver (now 87), who in the 1930's rode horses off of high-diving platforms. plat-forms. An accident during a dive made her blind 8 years into her career, ca-reer, and for the 11 years following, she continued to perform without the spectators knowing she had lost her sight. Newcomer Gabrielle Anwar plays Sonora, Cliff Robertspn("AT&T, the right choice") is the old cowboy-showman who takes her in, and Michael Schoeffling ("16 Candles") is Robertson's son and Carver's future fu-ture husband. Their romance, the nuts and bolts of training and diving, div-ing, and the problems of beauty, style and atmosphere. T Judged worthwhile and emotionally suitable for TEENAGERS. C Judged emotionally suitable suit-able andor understandable for young CHILDREN. 0 Has less OFFENSIVE CONTENT (indulgent social practices, violence, etc.) than most films with SAME MPA RATING.
