Show 16 Vernal Expren Wednesday, June 19, 1991 Newborns Community Calendar ' June 19 The Vernal K-Mart store will welcome cross-country runners who are raising funds for a new national monument In Washington, D.C. to honor the American flag and the national anthems The run will begin in San Francisco, Calif, and 20 runners will carry the flag through 16 states. They are expected to arrive at the Vernal store approximately 7:30 p.m. Citizens will be given the opportunity to donate to the monument at that time. June 20 Josie's ShootWomen's .22 rifle competition begins at 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Vernal Rod and Gun Club. Registrations can be obtained at the sporting goods stores in Vernal or they wilt be accepted the day of the shoot. Fee is $3. .22 caliber rifles only, no pistols, mags or target rifles. Prizes and drawings will be awarded. It will be in the State and County building's cafeteria and will begin at 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. The workshop is free of charge. June 22 Kick-off to public safety awareness project will begin at 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. in the Wal-Mart parking lot. Various agencies will display their equipment and ability to help the public. June 23 Rapture class is being offered to anyone who would like to attend. Class will be at the First Baptist Church, 2100 W. Hwy. 40. It will begin at 6 p.m. For more information, call 789-1347. June 24-28 Utah Valley All-Star soccer camp will be during this week. Two sessions will be offered daily, one at 9:30 a.m. until noon and the other, 5:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. Camp will be at the Vernal Middle School. Fee is $40 and Jim Dusara is the director. June 29 Grand Opening at the Western Park. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Ribbon cutting ceremony at 12 noon. Women's barrel racing, outdoor arena, starts at 10 a.m. Calf roping in the indoor arena, 12:30 p.m. Quilt show: convention center. Valoy Eaton, one-man art show, museum. MINI QUILT pattern will be taught during a class by Saundra Tripp and Annette Bracken. Two classes will be on July 2 at the Western Park. The classes are in conjunction with the Trunk Show of the Outlaw Trail Quilt show. Outlaw Trail quilt show plans made In connection with the Outlaw Trail quilt show, the "Pieces of Love" quilt guild is sponsoring other oth-er activities for the public. The first event will be a trunk show on July 1 at 7 p.m. Also, classes will be offered on July 2. The trunk show will be presented by Saundra Tripp and Annette Bracken. These ladies will be spending two days in the Vernal area to judge some quilts as well as teach classes. They will bring with them several finished quilts to display. dis-play. These quilts will not be part of the Outlaw Trail quilt show but can be seen during the trunk show. Two classes will be taught on Tuesday, July 2. Bracken will teach the miniature churn dash quilt pat tern from 9 p.m. until 12 noon, and Tripp will teach a fast method for constructing flying geese from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. These activities will be at the Western Park. The Outlaw Trail quilt show will be open on June 29, July 3, 4 and 5 from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. and on July 6 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. For more information on the trunk show andor classes, contact Cathy Bigelow at Molly Jean Fabrics. Any quilters interested in placing a quilt in the Outlaw Trail quilt show can drop their quilts off at the Antique Mall or Molly Jean Fabrics before June 26. Jamee Hoffman competes for Miss Utah Jamee Hoffman, daughter of Teresa Hoffman of Vernal, attended the Miss Utah Scholarship pageant June 11-15 in Orem. She was crowned Miss Uintah County Fair last year. - ' iA -' ".. (J f'-ii I Commenting on her experience, Hoffman said that she. was given the opportunity to become acquainted with the other contestants and the experience was very positive and exhilarating. She stated that the young women were able to become close friends during the preliminaries preliminar-ies and leading into the final night The 1991 Miss Utah Pageant was the largest state pageant in number of contestants held in the national Miss America pageant system. The young women competed in the areas of physical fitness, onstage on-stage personality, talent and interview. inter-view. Miss Uintah County pageant committee com-mittee members were impressed with the amount of exceptional talent tal-ent performed on the final night and were excited to see a most entertaining entertain-ing finale, including all 63 contestants. Dan Batty Dan Batty celebrates 91 years young A family reunion was recendy held at the Dan Batty ranch to honor Mr. Batty on his 91 birthday. Some of the family members were able to camp at the ranch and were joined for a family dinner, program, reminiscing remi-niscing and games by other members mem-bers and guests. One of the highlights high-lights of the reunion was a hayride for the children. Batty turned 91 on June 6. His family includes wife, Vonda, and children, Vern, Rex, Neal, Marie Wardle and Nola Kendall, all of Vernal. In total, 82 family members were present along with a number of guests.
