( More babies in the USA die because be-cause of birth defects, low birth-weight birth-weight and prematurity than any other cause. One of every 14 babies in the U.S. has a birth defect that is present when a baby is born. The March of Dimes coordinates the efforts of thousands of researchers re-searchers and millions of volunteers who are dedicated to preventing birth defects. Through research, health services, educational services, ser-vices, coalition and advocacy, the March of Dimes spearheads innovative innova-tive programs in many different areas. ar-eas. These programs often gain further fur-ther support and funding from the public and private sectors. The third annual Vernal "Jail and Bail" is scheduled for Thursday, September 13 from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Vernal Kmart store, according to Dennis Augustus, committee member. mem-ber. "Jail and Bail" is sponsored by the Greater Utah Chapter of the March of Dimes. The proceeds from th& event will benefit the Foundation's Campaign for Healthier Babies. "Jail and Bail is a fun event that allows our community to become involved in a worthy cause," said Augustus. "Community support at every level contributes to the future of America's healthy babies, children chil-dren and mothers." In the "Jail and Bails" throughout the country, local community leaders lead-ers are mock "arrested," fingerprinted, fingerprint-ed, given a mug shot and sentenced to one hour in the March of Dimes Jail. While in jail, these prisoners raise "bail" in the form of contributions contribu-tions to the March of Dimes in their fight against birth defects, infant mortality and low birthweight. The March of Dimes is committed to the health of America's infants, children and mothers. The organization organiza-tion has recently adopted the "Campaign for Healthier Babies" aimed at educating the public about good prenatal care and prevention of birth defects. The March of Dimes now is concentrating con-centrating on two critical areas that show promise in preventing birth defects and infant deaths gene therapy and the prevention of preterm labor. In the past, the March of Dimes has provided funding, leadership and direction when the rubella vaccine vac-cine became available. They helped to insure that women their child-bearing child-bearing years were inoculated. Congenital rubella syndrome (CRS), which can cause blindness, deafness, mental retardation and death, once afflicted thousands of babies. In a 1964-64 epidemic of the disease, 20,000 babies were born with CRS. Because the vaccine is widely available, only five babies were born with CRS in 1987. The March of Dimes also provides health education programs to teach women about prenatal care at no cost. The local committee members of the March of Dimes "Jail and Bail" are, Dennis and Diane Augustus, Sue Buckalew, Jojo Gale, Freda Parker, Doug Timothy and Dick Winters.
