Show 20 Vernal Expreii Wednesday, Hillcrest falls On Saturday, Riverton and Hillcrest had advanced to the championship cham-pionship game of the Bambino Major, Utah South State Tournament in Vernal with Hillcrest Union needing two wins over Riverton to unseat last years state champion. After falling behind in the first inning in-ning 6-2, Hillcrest played an even ball game over the next three innings in-nings and then gradually creeped back in it in the final two to provide a thrilling and fitting finish to the championship game before bowing out. Going into the bottom of the sixth, Hillcrest Union has closed to gap to 7-6 and had the top of their batting order up. Riverton was forced to go back to their best throwing, Bryce Newbold in an attempt to close out the game and take the championship in one game. If Hillcrest wins this one, the two are even and a rubber match will decide the state champion. champi-on. Hillcrest Union has Chad Keetch in the wings with six full innings in-nings available for the final game, if necessary. Hillcrest Union battled the flame throwing Newbold and ended up with Tyler Jensen on third, and Chad Keetch on second with two out and the number four batter Monte Ruttenbur up to bat. The beginning be-ginning of a storybook ending? No to be as Newbold reached back and got a little extra which resulted in a week ground ball back to him, which he threw to first for the third out and the championship. Too little, lit-tle, too late for Hillcrest who had battled Orem Northwest for ten inning in-ning just the night before to get to the championship. A gutty performance perfor-mance by two great teams and a shame that anyone had to lose. But that's the nature of the beast we play traditionally each summer. How they scored: 1st inning - Riverton Joe Maio opened the game drawing a walk. Mark Phistcr then hit what appeared to be a routine pop fly to short, but a fielding error (misjudged ball) left safely on first and Maio on second. Bricc Newbold, the pitcher and clean up hitter then singled, took second on a fielding miscue and was thrown out at third trying to stretch the play to three bases. Maio and Fliistcr scored on the hit Kevin ,?e Jolley Chev. - Olds. - Says AM M Cll". H -Sh ippsd fr-i-wi! l'.i-3 , f;0"t heol A( rr.'i. Josh Crossmont then hit into a fielders choice which produced pro-duced no outs and the bases were loaded. A single by Todd Mitchell followed by a double by Sam Swenson then scored Kemp, White, and Crossmont A follow up double by Maio (batting for the second time in the inning) scored Mitchell and Swenson. Hillcrest came back to within five in their half of the first was Tyler Jensen opened with a single. Jensen then moved to second on a fielders choice. Chad Keetch then took Newbold to a 0-2 count before dialing dial-ing 8 for the games only home run which gave Hillcrest 2 counters. Riverton 7, Hillcrest Union 2. 5th inning - Hillcrest Union gave pitcher Jared Lunt who replaced Newbold in the fourth a greeting as they got back in the game. Tyler Jensen opened with a single and moved to second and third on passed balls. Chad Keetch singled to score Jensen. Monte Ruttenbur then doubled and Steven Snow followed fol-lowed with a double to score Keetch and Rettenbur. Snow moved to third on a fielders choice and scored on a sacrifice fly by Angel Torres. Final Game Score: Riverton 7, Hillcrest Union 6. Riverton took the Utah South championship with the win as they scored seven runs in the first inning on five hits, two walks, and two errors. er-rors. Hillcrest Union held them scoreless the rest of the way. Winning Pitcher Brice Newbold scattered six hits over his four innings in-nings pitched and struck out six in recording the win. He allowed only two runs to score which came on the first inning dinger by Chad Keetch. Riverton advances to the Pacific Southwest Region for the second year in a row. In 1989 they lost a heartbreaker in the final inning of the Regional Championship game which precluded their advancement to the Babe Ruth World Scries. Both Hillcrest and Riverton arc well coached teams with a great bunch of young talent on the teams. Add in Orem Northwest and Vernal Blue and the top four teams could play with anyone on any given day. Riverton will represent the rest of Utah South in the region tournament tourna-ment GEO "... fp 353 AC. AM f M NOW H U ' ' Ei!U If ) - - j 4 Now 1990 Goo Gtorm GS! Orem Northwest finished their 1990 season sea-son with this one which put them third in the Utah South. Hillcrest Union advanced to the title ti-tle game on Saturday against defending de-fending champion Riverton.
