Show Vernal Express Wednesday, Juiy 25, 1990 19 Vernal loses HR Derby to Hillcrest, takes fourth Vernal Blue lined up with Hillcrest Union in a semifinal match for what turned out to be more of a home run derby than a baseball game result Hillcrest Union 12, Vernal Blue 3. Vernal Blue settled for a great fourth place finish in only their first year playing Babe Ruth Baseball which includes teams from across the state including teams from Salt Lake, Orem, Provo, and all points South. Slugfest is an appropriate term for this one as five of the 32 dingers hit in the tournament last week occurred oc-curred in this game. Snow, Torres, Christison, and Rettenbur dial 8 for Hillcrest Daggett replys for Vernal with too little, too late Hillcrest overcame a 3-1 Vernal lead in the bottom of the third with a two home run, five run performance perfor-mance led by Monte Ruttenbur and Angel Torres who each dialed '8 in the inning. Hillcrest shut out the Vernal nine over the final two innings while scoring six un-needed insurance runs to send Vernal to the sidelines for the final two games of the tournament tour-nament The five round trippers came from Jake Daggett of Vernal, Monte Ruttenbur, Angel Torres, Blake Christinson, and Steven Snow of Hillcrest Union. How they scored: 1st inning - Second batter Blake Christinson dialed 8 with a 1-2 count to give Hillcrest the lead. Hillcrest Union 1, Vernal Blue 0. 2nd inning - Vernal Blue opened the inning with a double by Rhctt Peterson and then Jake Daggett followed fol-lowed one out later with his first tournament home run to give Vcmal the temporary lead. Vernal 2, Hillcrest Union 1. 3rd inning - Hillcrest Union's Chad Keetch opened with a one out base on balls. Monte Ruttenbur hit Hillcrest second dinger of the game to score Keetch and himself. Steven Snow followed with a walk. Angel Torres dialed 8 for Hillcrest for the second time of the inning to score Snow and himself.- Brandon Green followed with a single. Travis Reeves walked and moved Green to second. Green took third and Reeves second on a passed ball. Green scored on a wild pitch. Vernal opened the inning with two outs then David Lawson drew a walk. Lawson moved to second on a passed ball. Rhett Peterson hit his second double of the day and Lawson scored. Hillcrest Union 6, Vernal Blue 3. Vernal nets finals with win over 3rd place Delta In the semifinal game of the championship bracket, Vcmal met Delia w ho had just fallen from the winner bracket for the first time ever ev-er in youth baseball competition. The game started out as a squeaker iih Delta ahead, but a seven run dih inning by Vernal game them a berth in the championship game and put this semifinal in ice. Vcmal hit three doubles and four singles to score. 7 in Uic final suna and break a 3-3 tic for the win. The team then slopjxrd Delia's scoring oii.kk in the bottom of the sixth to lake the hard fought win and advance ad-vance in the tournament. 4th inning - Chad Keetch opened the inning for Hillcrest with a single. sin-gle. Follow up singles by Monte Ruttenbur and Steven Snow scored Keetch. Hillcrest Union 7, Vernal Blue 3. 5th inning - Hillcrest blew the game open in this inning as Brandon Green reached first safely to open the inning on and infield error. er-ror. Travis Reeves drew a walk and Green moved to second. Tyler Jensen and Blake Christinson both replaced Reeves and Greens as they hit into infield forces and reached on the fielders choices. Chad Keetch then singled to score Reeves and move Christinson to third. Keetch stole second. Monte Ruttenbur singled to score Christinson and Keetch. Steve Snow followed with Hillcrest's fourth dinger of the game to score Ruttenbur and himself. Game final score: Hillcrest Union 12, Vcmal Blue 3. Hillcrest moved into the other semifinal game with Orem Northwest which followed the game, and Vernal Blue coached by Dan Smuin, Nolan Jackson, and Jim Daggett settled for the fourth place trophy. The team roster of the fourth place Vcmal Blue team included Matt Massey, Shane Smuin, Chris Laris, David Lawson, Rhctt Peterson, Jeremy Jackson, Smith Nyman, Jake Daggett, DJ. Wiseman, Tyler Gibbons, Clint Stagg, Charles Pcdcrson, Jon Jenkins, Chad Galley, and Lynn Hadlock. Delta with the loss ended a fine first year showing, and settled for a third place Utah South State finish. 1 low ihcy scored: 1st inning - Delta came out fast as Justin Losce reached on an error by the first sackcr. Aaron Anderson then reached on Vcmal's second straight fielding error, this one by the shortstop. Johna Droubay then drew a walk and Delia had the bases loaded w ith no hits being recorded. Orem Southeast in the Bambino Minors breezed into the Utah South with two lopsided wins in the Roosevelt District Tournament and was listed as one of the teams to beat. In the second round the Orem nine put the hurt on Vernal Blue 13-3, then set it on cruise until unexpected unexpect-ed West Jordan 2 derailed them in the semifinal game of the championship champi-onship bracket. In the opening game of the championship cham-pionship round Orem Southeast found themselves up against Vernal Blue with the loser taking fourth and going home for the season. In the Rubbcrmatch, Vernal posted a four run lead in the second inning and then matched Orem over the final fi-nal four innings to gain a measure of revenge and remain in contention for the Utah South title with a 9-6 win. Brett Johnston opened the game at pitch and with the four run lead, deferred de-ferred to Cory Kcbcrt and "Fudge" Peterson who closed the game for Vernal. Vernal got nine runs on 12 hits and not errors. Vernal pitching held Orem Southeast to six runs, scattering six hits over six innings. Cory Kebert and Jon Muir each scored a pair of runs to lead Vernal to the rubber match win. How they scored: 2nd inning - Cory Kcbcrt opened the inning with a single. Jon Workman followed with a single and moved Kcbcrt to third. Workman stole second base. Clint Peterson added Vcrnal's third straight single which scored Kcbcrt and Workman. Jon Muir walked and Peterson moved to second. Greg Atwood got Vernal fourth hit of the inning which scored Peterson and moved Muir to third. Steve Hatch then singled to score Muir. Vernal 4, Orem SE 1. 4th inning - Andy Long opened the inning with a single and moved 5th inning - Vernal opened the scoring when Brett Johnston singled. sin-gled. Cory Kebert followed with a single which moved Johnston to third. Kebert stole second on the next pitch. Jon Muir then singled with two out to score Kebert and Johnston. Wilson then singled and was thrown out trying to stretch the hit into a double. Pearson moved to third on the play. Aland then followed with a single which -scored Pearson. Barney then reached second on a fielders choice. Thomas followed with a single which moved Barney to third and scored Aland. Wakefield then singled for the fourth Orem hit of the inning which scored Thomas. Vernal 9, Orem SE 4. 6th inning - Aland opened for Orem with a two out walk. Barney singled and moved Aland to third. Thomas moved to first on a catcher interference to load the bases. Wakefield singled to score Aland and Barney. Final game score: Vcmal 9, Orem SE 6. Sports all-star soccer For the past several months many girls and boys have been playing soccer for the city. Finally all the hard work and dedication has paid off. The all-star soccer team will be going to a tournament in Salt Lake. This team calls themselves the Uintah Outlaws and is coached by Dr. Larry Wilken. The boys are 8-10 8-10 years old. The tournament will be held at Cottonwood Heights Elementary at begin at 11:45 against Roy on Thursday July 26, and will continue through Friday. After the tournament the team will be going to Dirks Field on Saturday. They have been invited to watch the Salt Lake Sting play and hopefully beat the San Diego Nomads, both members of the American Professional Soccer League. The Oudaws will be parading on-to on-to the field before the game with special recognition and will remain, on the field for the National Anthem. After they will be able to play a game against Delta during half-time. At the conclusion of the game they are also invited to stay and watch the fireworks. All the boys are excited to participate partici-pate in the tournament and are hoping hop-ing to do well. Elephants never forget and neither do we!
