Show 1 2 Yams! hpmt Friday, August 8, 1986 Shower party set for Saturday at Steinaker The annual Perseid meteor shower will peak in the early morning hours of August 11. Those who make the effort ef-fort to get out and watch may see about one "shooting star" per minute. The first-quarter moon sets by midnight mid-night on the 11th. Meteors will become abundant each hour thereafter until the first light of dawn. Perseids can be seen in any part of the sky. But they have one thing in common. Their paths, if traced backwards, would all intersect at the constellation Perseus, in the northeastern nor-theastern part of the sky after midnight. The Perseids are thought to be bits of debris from a comet named Swift Tuttle, last seen in 1862. They travel through space along the same orbit as the comet. The Earth passes through this stream every year in mid-August. Perseid meteors strike our atmosphere at-mosphere with a speed of 38 miles per second. They have a light, fluffy structure struc-ture like fragile dust clouds, and most are only a small fraction of an inch across. Atmospheric friction burns' them up at an altitude of 40 to 70 miles. For the best viewing, find a dark place with a wide-open view of the sky. Any moonlight or "light pollution" from cities and towns will greatly reduce the number of meteors seen. The personnel at Steinaker Lake State Park and the Utah Field House of Natural History State Park have gotten together to provide you with a dark' place to hold a METEOR SHOWER PARTY. It will be held at Steinaker Lake State Park from 10 p.m. Sunday, August 10th, to 2 a.m., Monday, August 11th, weather permitting. permit-ting. Uintah High School was represented at Utah Business Week, July 27 through August 4, by four students; Deena McDonald, Cindy Kirk, Ken Merrell and Steven Land. They were among 250 students from throughout Utah attending the event at Utah State University in Logan, Utah. The participants had the opportunity opportuni-ty to tour some of the local businesses and spent many hours in workshops, attending lectures and getting practical prac-tical instruction on the field of business from business men and women who donated their time to instruct in-struct them. It was not all work and no play, however. Fun activities, a western dance and barbecue, a Hawaiian luau, Mexican fiesta and a graduation gradua-tion banquet were included in the Utah Business Week format. The students said it was a very worth while event and they learned "quite a bit" about the business world.
