I - A SUCCESSFUL catch is turned in by Ute baseballer, Todd Mulville during Uintah high School practice, Tuesday. The Ute baseball team dropped a doubleheader to Grand Junction Cen- The wet and cold weather forced the Uintah Ute baseball team to practice indoors and finally the Utes got outdoors, out-doors, but the bad news was that their first action out on a diamond was in Grand Junction, Monday and the Grand Junction Central team defeated the first-day-on-a-playing-surface Utes, 16-3, 9-3. When the Utes took infield in-field practice before the first game with Grand Junction Central it was the first time that the Utes had competed together as a team. Uintah High School jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a run by Gary Swim. Brian Smuin grounded out and Darin Nelson struck out. Swim singled with two outs and scored on a fielder's choice by Kurt Robb. Joe LeBeau committed the third out. Grand Junction Central overcame the Ute 1-0 advantage with two runs in the bottom of the first inning for a 2-1 advantage. Ryan Siddoway got on base and an error by the Grand Junction central catcher with two outs, but Siddoway was stranded when Glen Murray was whiffed by the Central pitcher in the top of the second inning. Central scored two runs in the bottom bot-tom of the second inning to increased their lead to three runs at 4-1. Hickman and Conway were walked and scored the third and fourth runs for the Grand Junction Central team. Nelson was hit by the pitcher in the top of the third inning and Swim ripped rip-ped out a single. Uintah's Nelson scored to cut the Grand Junction Central Cen-tral lead to two runs at 4-2. Three runs in the bottom of the third inning put the Central team up by five runs at 7-2. McLennan singled. Payne was walked and Conway got on base on a error. The Uintah Uin-tah Utes had a runner get on base in the bottom of the sixth inning, but he was stranded. Swim netted this third single of the game in the bottom of the seventh inning, but once again the Utes were unable to drive him in. The Uintah Utes were blanked in the top of the first inning and Grand Junction Junc-tion Central scored four runs in its half of the inning for a 4-0 lead in the second game. The Uintah Uin-tah team will host Union, April 24 and will battle Duchesne on the road, April 25. Uintah and American Fork will combat in American Fork, April 28.
