Child-Proof Caps Cut Poisoning Deaths by 66 Childhood poisoning deaths have fallen 66 percent since enactment of legislation requiring child-resistant caps on many household chemicals and medicines, the government announced an-nounced Tuesday. The Consumer Product Safety Commission Com-mission said the number of accidental poisonings fell from 216 in 1972 to 74 in 1980, the latest year for which figures are available. The commission also said the number of youngsters treated in hospital emergency rooms each year for accidental ingestion of poison dropped drop-ped from 150,000 in 1975 to 130,000 last year. Many of the poisonings in recent years involved generally non-lethal products not covered by child-resistant-cap legislation, such as plants, soap and perfume, the commission commis-sion said. - Nancy Steorts, commission chairwoman, chair-woman, released the figures at a news conference called to mark National Poison Prevention Week, and to draw attention to the still serious problem. "Child-resistant closures.. .have had a dramatic impact on the number of childhood poisonings," Mrs. Steorts said. "Still, 74 deaths, or 50 deaths, or even one child who dies so needlessly .is too many." "We hope parents will take some time this week to inspect their homes to locate medicines and products that may be dangerous to their children and see that they are safely out of harms way," she said.
