A basketball story follows as it was printed in the Vernal Express on Feb. 13, 1941. ALTAMONT WIN'S CLOSE GAME FROM DUCHESNE Roosevelt and Altamont registered victories in the Uintah district Friday. The Rough Riders trounced Alterra, 40 to 18, while Altamont nosed out Duchesne, 23 to 22. Uintah, which had a bye, is at the top of the standings, with four straight wins. Friday's winners win-ners are tied for second place with three wins and two losses. Baumgartel, Roosevelt guard, was high scorer with seven field goals. Duchesne and Altamont put on a thrilling scrap. Duchesne was out in front, 7 to 4, in the first period, but was trailing, 9 to 12 at the half. Altamont held its three-point lead through the third period, and at the final gun had a one point margin, 23 to 22. Both fives gathered in eight field goals. VERNAL TOWN, CCC TEAM WIN OPENERS A fair sized crowd Sunday witnessed witness-ed the game between the Massadona CCC and Vernal baseball teams the score being 12 to 2 in favor of Vernal. Three double plays enlivened the game, Vernal making two. In the first inning Vernal secured six runs out of six hits. Manager James Abplanalp made two safe hits out of three times at bat. Abplanalp and Scott pitched throughout the game, with Vernal securing nine strikeouts and Massadona five. The team support for Scott was weak. The Vernal team shows exceptional strength although five of the players are new to the team. Only one error was scored against them. Vernal Junior High's varsity volleyball team owns a record of 4 wins and 1 loss due to wins over Duchesne, twice; Altamont and Roosevelt. The Panthers' only loss was to the West Junior High Vikings. Members of the Vernal volleyball team are Kelly Adams, Tonya Schulz, Murl Ward, Becky Steward, Katy Weber, JaeOman Batty, Michelle Humphries, Cindy Christensen, Lisa Smuin, Sheree Leech, Debbie Sulser, Brenda Anderson, Cassie Belcher and Kam Kraft. Vernal beat the Eagles in Duchesne for their first win of the season. The Panther varsity team won the first game, 15 to 5 and lost the second game, 15-7. Vernal pocketed a win in the third game, 15-10. Anderson and Sulser were the top scorers for Vernal in the first game at six points and Steward, Adams and Belcher added one point. Adams led the Panthers with five points in the second se-cond game and Anderson scored two points. Anderson was the top scorer for Vernal in the third game at five points and Belcher and JaeOman Batty added add-ed three points. Katy Weber and Sulser scored one point each. Vernal's junior varsity team downed down-ed Duchesne, 15 to 8 and 15 to 2. Belcher was the top scorer in the first game at nine points and Steward and Tonya Schulz added two points. Kam Kraft scored one counter. Steward scored six points in the second game and Lisa Smuin and Belcher pocketed four counters. Humphries added one point. The Panthers' junior varsity team dropped the first game to Roosevelt Junior High in Vernal, 15 9, but won the second game, 15-9 and the third game, 15-3. The Vikings lost the first game, 17-15, but beat Vernal, 15-13, in the second game and 15-9 in the third game. Adams and Sulser led the Panthers in the first game at four points and Weber, Anderson and Ward scored two points each. Anderson was the top Vernal Ver-nal scorer in the second game at five points and Ward and Batty added three points each. Sulser and Weber scored one point each. Ward and Sulser were the number one scorers for Vernal in the third game at three points each. Batty added two points and Anderson scored one point. Altamont's junior varsity team defeated Vernal, 15-7 and 15-13. Adams led the Panthers in the first game with two points and Smuin, Schulz, Belcher, Sulser and Leech scored one point each. Sulser was the top scorer in the second game at five points and Leech and Schulz added three points. Belcher and Weber scored one point. The Lady Longhorns beat Vernal's varsity team, 15 to 13 in the first game, but Vernal rallied for a triumph due to 15-7 and 15-10 wins.
