Show wedmsdoy, October i2, 1983 Vernal ExErmfldvertlsef 29 Three wcays flo hunf deer By Hartt Wixom, Vernal Express outdoors writer With the deer quest rapidly approaching, ap-proaching, let's look at three different ways you can return with venison. First, with horses. Don't over-use them. I just returned from a week's deer-elk-bear shoot where guides made clients get off mounts at least 300 yards below any rim or ridgeline. You may be able to approach closer with the right cayuse, but it only takes one little whinny or stamped foot to give the show away. Use the mount to gain your altitude, then tie securely to the halter rope (tie with rope to avoid busting up expensive expen-sive bridles, and losing your transportation transpor-tation in and out besides) where a front leg can't become tangled. Then hunt downhill using binoculars to take every slope apart. You are better bet-ter off to hunt from above because visibility is better, and most deer are less likely to expect danger there. When convinced bucks are not there, mount again for the next mountain. Avoid confrontation with game on the way up, deliberately trying to pick steep ridges or other places where you won't spook your quarry. You want them to remain in place until you can locate them from above. Another method is with four-wheel drive. In expansive places like the Book Cliffs, Cache, Manti Mountain et al, you may actually locate more game, especially early in season, staying stay-ing with vehicle. You'll see more-providing more-providing you don't get in too big a hurry. But you can make the same mistake on foot. . As with horse hunting, you will want to pause on points and canyons to glass them thoroughly. Never roar right up, but ease in slowly, and check the outer limits of your rifle first. If already out of range it won't much matter, and if closer, you may still have time for a shot several seconds later. Once again, don't over-drive. Get out and walk the potential hot spots. If in thick and rough terrain where visibility is limited, you may have to use your vehicle only to gain altitude as with horses. But in many wide-open units you can examine miles of territory ter-ritory for bucks on the move, especially especial-ly morning and evening, from a jeep or truck. I don't agree with those who say this technique is lazy. Whatever is most effective. ef-fective. Of course, you have to avoid getting too comfortable, talking, listening to football games, etc. when you should be scanning every square foot of ground, paying attention to edges of cover where bucks not only tend to feed but hold tight before crossing cross-ing sage flats and meadows. A third method, for many poorly- equipped souls who have only a passenger car or no 4 x 4, yet still want to hunt: You are at a disadvanage certainly, cer-tainly, but not down and out. Use the vehicle on an upper highway or good road to gain all possible altitude, then hike out laterally, remaining high. But get away from traffic. Glass very carefully below you. Give up elevation begrudgingly! Do your hunting from above. This is especially true in a year like this where warm weather has kept buckskins high. That is where we found them last week on the aforementioned aforemen-tioned hunt, right under the cliffs and rims, summits and saddles. Check out the thick oak brush and aspens before writing them off. Leaves are pretty much gone at the higher elevations, but deer still feel secure in a maze of aspen trunks. Check out all aspen patches pat-ches thoroughly, perhaps those the others haven't. You can score by all three methods. Horses are always valuable for packing pack-ing game out, but in Utah you can usually get near some hot deer country coun-try via wheels. However, you will have to go high if weather remains warm, . and some routes are closed due to last spring's flooding. Make sure you can get where you want to go.
