Show 6 Vernal ExpTeSS Wedncsdoy, October 12, 1983 Strong Country, Strong Press Inseparable "Our liberty depends on freedom of the press and that cannot be limited without being lost". Those words by Thomas Jefferson tell us something about the real meaning of the First Amendment. They fortify the purpose and the intent of the guarantees the framers of our Constitution gave us when they structured the future of our nation. Jefferson's words leave little lit-tle room for interpretation they're clear, concise, meaningful. meaning-ful. We Americans know although al-though sometimes we forget to articulate that a strong country coun-try and a strong, free press are inseparable. So we might take pause during National Newspaper News-paper Week to reflect on Jefferson's Jeffer-son's words and to remind ourselves our-selves that any effort, regardless of the source, to limit a free press would have a chilling effect ef-fect on the freedoms we as a nation na-tion are privileged to enjoy. We're a fortunate people and we have a lot to be thankful for and press freedom ranks high among our precious treasures. Newspapers play a formidable formi-dable role in our whole democratic demo-cratic system. They are an important im-portant part of our history and a powerful voice in steering the development of our nation. They are an indispensable part of all of us and of the communities com-munities they serve. Newspapers Newspa-pers inform, they interpret, they help place complex matters in perspective, they entertain, and they are the number one advertising adver-tising medium. They serve the diverse needs of their readers by providing the kind of information informa-tion all of us need to make those important decisions we all face in our day-to-day living. Newspapers are indeed a part of our daily lives. They are a staying power for freedom and a mighty force in helping make our democracy work. We must never lose sight of the press freedoms we have which make it possible for newspapers to carry out their responsibilities. responsibili-ties. We should cherish the freedoms free-doms our Forefathers gave us and we should guard them tenaciously. William C. Marcil President and Publisher The Forum Fargo, N.D. Chairman and President, American Newspaper Publishers Association Governor AAatheson scores big in recent political poll Governor Scott Matheson made quite an impression on people he came in contact with on his recent trip to Uintah County. In a historically Republican area, Matheson is still quite popular. While he did not carry the 1980 gubernatorial election in Uintah Uin-tah County, he made a good showing for a Democrat. In that election the Republican candidate, Bob Wright, received 4037 votes to Matheson's 3130. Governor Matheson has not yet declared his candidacy for the 1984 gubernatorial election, however, according ac-cording to a poll taken for the Deseret News and KSL Radio, he would win hands down. The poll, conducted by Dan Jones and Associates, showed 49 percent of Utah residents would definitely vote for Matheson, should he run. Another 29 percent said they would probably vote for Matheson, while only 17 percent said they would not vote for him. The poll did not break down the state into areas, so there is no indication how Matheson might do in Uintah County, but there is no doubt his recent visit enhanced his position. The governor did well in all political categories. Of people who consider themselves Republican, 68 percent said they would vote for him again. Democrats overwhelmingly approved Matheson, 95 percent saying they would vote for him again. Independent voters also supported the governor, the poll showing 82 percent would vote for him again. The pollsters said there was a 4 percent possibility of error. U. S. Representative Dan Marriott has been considering the possibility of running on the Republican ticket in 1984. ile is considered by many Republicans to be the strongest possible possi-ble candidate, but the recent poll may discourage anyone from running against Matheson. This may be especially true of someone who already holds a petition like Represen-(ative Represen-(ative Marriott docs. The Republican Party holds most of (he major political off ires in the Mate, n nd they would like to have the position posi-tion of governor as well. The iVmnrrats have held the position for many years, with Mathewn In his second se-cond term and Calvin Hampton serving serv-ing 12 years prior to that. A massive campaign has already been started by the Republican Party in hopes of shifting sentiment away from the Democrats.
