BY MINERVA 866-550-0510 ences. "As a musician it got hard to play and be background music, which is inevitable at any bar," Gardiner said. "So I wanted to create a space where music could be the focal point." The small venue, located under Fawn, the clothing boutique Gardiner co-owns with Heather Seals, emphasizes comfort, designed like a large living room1 area. Couches and bar tables face the low stage, which is positioned in the center of the narrow room, making it, and the band playing on it, the center of attention. As a Park City native and an independent artist, Gardiner said she got her start "playing at the open mics and honing in on my sound and finding my voice in front of an audience." Now out of business, Renee's Bar and Cafe" was her favorite venue to play, but even there she said "it was still just background music. The musician was still just there to fill in the space, not really to be the focal point." Paired with her experience as an entrepreneur, Gardiner knew what Park City needed and how to go about providing it. She started selling her handmade hats and scarves at the Salt Lake Farmer's Market at age 20 and opened a yarn store in Salt Lake by the time she was 24. Now, on July 1, only 9 days before her 30th birthday, she plans to officially open the next of her art-inspired businesses. Gardiner said the idea for her music-centered venue was original, but when she started researching for other similar venues, she found a couple clubs were already doing what she hopes to accomplish with The Listening Room. While on a buying trip for Fawn to Los Angeles, she had the opportunity to visit Hotel Cafe", another musically-focused venue. "Everyone is .intent on the music. They're all very respectful. The energy goes to the listening," she said of Hotel Cafe\ "You don't even have to know who's on the list. You just know it's going to be good." Gardiner hopes her booking lineup can make The Listening Room a reliable place to hear good music. "I feel like my taste is probably a little more inclined towards the independent artist," she said. "I'm thirsty for whatever's not mass produced; whatevers raw and real." She plans to start booking by contacting bands she likes and is "hoping to create a name where people, even bigger bands, want to play here because they're looking for that connection." In addition to the opportunity to hear new music and connect with bands, Parkites are encouraged to stop by during the day to use the free Wi-Fi internet until 8 p.m., enjoy "locally priced" appetizers, from a menu developed by Gardiner and local chef Beckah Stevens, and a full bar, with an emphasis on wine. Gardiner also hopes to keep the admission prices for music at or under $10. Music will generally start around 8 or 9 p.m. and ending around 10 or 11 p.m. After the music, The Listening Room will transition to a lounge, where Gardiner hopes other people interested in art and music will be able to connect with one another. "This town is great, and what we're lacking is something authentic for the locals," she said. With a solidly outlined business plan and confidence in her product, Gardiner believes that "economy shouldn't stifle passion. And because of that I'm willing to take the risk, because I'm passionate about what this could bring to the economy." She hopes that The Listening Room brings more people out to Main Street to her own, and other, local businesses. "I give a nod and appreciate and respect so much what the local bars are doing and have done for the music scene here and I just hope to add to that." » T h c Listening Room 60S Main Street thclislcningroompc@gmail.com www.lhelislcningroomparkcily.com Ongoing: : , ^^ : Every Wednesday after Deer Valley concerts, party continues at The; Listening Room with food, drinks and more live music.
