As a high school student in Santa Clara Valley in 1970, he and a group of friends decided to start a community league after being introduced to the sport in gym class. "I've been on the front end of the whole movement," he says. Farris also impacted the soccer scene on a national level when he coached the men's and women's teams at St. Mary's College in California throughout the '80s and '90s. He led the women to national championships in 1984 and 86 and served as the competition director for the 1999 women's World Cup. He later retired from coaching and became a kinesiology professor at the college, which gave him more time to focus on philanthropic efforts. In 2004, Farris took his first trip. to the Dominican Republic to volunteer for Kids Alive International, a Christian mission dedicated to rescuing orphans and vulnerable children and raising them to be contributing members of their communities. "It's an organization that pulls kids out of whatever circumstances they're in and provides them with a home, loving family and school," Farris explains. The program currently cares for more than 6,000 kids in 17 countries. Farris has made 15 trips to the region and continues to make two visits each year to work with the children and run soccer camps. He travels with a group of college students in January and makes another trip with members of his church in July. To depict the types of situations that.Kids Alive encounters, Farris tells a story of a 10year-old boy named Valentine who came to his soccer camp two years ago in the town of Constanza. At the beginning of the camp, all the kids were clearing off the field, but Valentine stood in the middle and wouldn't move. Farris yelled at him to get off the field, and finally two other children walked over to him and led him away. Farris later found out that Valentine had been rescued three days prior to the incident because his parents had kept him confined to his house for his entire life. '*His whole life, he had never been outside of his house." Apparently, Valentine's older brother had been murdered and his parents thought they were protecting him from evil spirits. Despite the first-day confusion, Valentine continued participating' in the soccer camp. "In the middle of the soccer games, he'd pick up a flower and twirl it between his ringers because he'd never seen flowers, or he'd turn and face the wind just to feel it on his face since he'd never been outdoors," Farris recalls. This past January, Farris got to see Valentine again. "He is just doing phenomenally. It's a very cool thing." Farris has developed Iast- With REIC's Simple 4-Step Real Estate Wealth Building System!
