Show B-3 77?e Parfr Record Sat/Sun/Mon/Tues, November 1-4, 2008 UOP offers mainy options By ADIA WALDBURGER Of the Record staff The weather^ turning cooler, fall sports are winding down and locals are praying for snow. The numerous programs housed at the Utah Olympic Park (UOP) are gearing up for another winter season, with youth sports offered on the ice track, the freestyle hill and the ski jumps. New this year to the park is a small mogul hill that is being built before the snow flies. The bumps will allow the three freestyle programs that use the UOP for training to offer more complete programs. Activities on the ice track have also stepped up a notch with many more camps and sliding experiences available for youth. According to Utah Olympic Park director of sport development Alison Butz, the facility is trying to offer everything from camps to opportunities for people who want to participate in long-term programs. She added that the park.is offering more introductory programs, both new and long term. , Bobsled and Skeleton Olympic bobsled coach Pat Brown is offering many opportunities to youth ages 14 and up. If sliding down the long track at top speeds sounds daunting, the UOP assures beginners that introductory clinics are designed to give participants the basic sliding skills to safely navigate their way down the icy track at speeds up to 55 mph. Introduction Clinics to Bobsled and Skeleton The clinic will start with participants being fitted to equipment, followed by a track walk with the coach. The inaugural run is made from the junior start. After the clinic, youth may take the Advanced Driving School class. No prior skeleton and bobsled experience necessary. Program fee includes: track time, equipment and coaching. Participants must be at least 5 feet tall and weigh 100+ pounds. Advanced Bobsled and Skeleton Driving School The Advanced Driving School teaches more about the sports of bobsled or skeleton. Participants spend the first few days driving from the junior start. Based on progress and coach analysis, participants may move on to start three. After a day at start three, participants then move to the top of the track. The school will cover sled and equipment maintenance and the finer points of the sports. The program will be held Dec. 16-20 and costs $600. Participants must be 14 years of age for skeleton and 16 years of age for bobsled, and be at least 5 feet tall and weigh 100 or more pounds. Olympic Sliding Experience The Olympic Sliding Experience camp offers instruction in the sports of bobsled and skeleton March 5-7or March 12-14. The first day, Brown will teach bobsled driving. After sliding, UOP staff will give participants a tour of the park. On day two, participants will have an opportunity to learn how to drive a skeleton sled. In the afternoon, participants will skate at the Utah Olympic Oval in Kearns. Day three will start with a walk from the top of the track to the finish, followed by a ride in a four-man sled from the top of the track. In the afternoon, a reception and awards ceremony will complete the experience. The cost is $1,200 per person (includes track fees and coaching) Drivers / Skeleton First Half of Season, November and December $600 Second Half of Season, January through March: $600 Brakemen/Pushers Entire Season, November through March: $250 UAF Club Development Fees (includes track fees and coaching) Drivers / Skeleton First Half of Season, November and December: $3Q0 Second Half of Season, January and February: $300 Brakemen/Pushers Entire Season, November through February: $250 For information, please contact Brown, UAF bobsled and skeleton head coach, at pat.brown@olyparks.com or call 658-4252. Freestyle The Utah Olympic Park will now offer four nights of after-school training on the small hills, increased from two nights last year. Of course, the real highlight is the new mogul hill that will give the freestyle programs more chances to work on the bumps. Although each freestyle program has a home training resort, the UOP offers youth a chance to train under the lights without any interference from other activities. According to UOP marketing and public relations coordinator Linda Jager, the after-school programs under the lights are ideal because they allow more training time for young athletes. AxisFreeride Axis Freeride, run by Olympian Chris "Hatch" Haslock trains youth ages 8 and up in terrain park, halfpipe, slopestyle, aerials, moguls and big mountain offered at the UOP, Park City Mountain Resort and The Canyons, according to program director Mary Partridge. Axis has programs rangingfromtwo days per week to full time. It also have introductory sessions for vacationers or locals who just want a few sessions. The programs are taught by Haslock and his elite coaching staff.
