Show e(Sat/Sun/Mon/Tues, November1-4, The Park Record . . - • • - ( . -'/if, t : i\ Park Record Voter Guide Question 1 Please differentiate yourself from your opponent. Summit County Council Seat A Sally Elliott Bill Miles Democrat Republican EXPERIENCE, experience, experience. This election will determine the voice of Summit County as we transition from Commission to Council/Manager. I am the only candidate who has experience in both forms of governance. My opponent has been a gentleman and has been polite in his efforts. He is to be congratulated on his willingness to educate himself and address the issues. County politics transcend both State and Federal partisan political issues as we normally define them. I hope that in the future, the Utah State Legislature will enable us to elect non-partisan County officials ... but I'll not hold my breath! I have conducted a vigorous door-to-door campaign, reaching over 3,000 households, from which I have learned your thoughts. Thank you for sharing with me: I can't imagine serving without your input. Education, management experience, and government experience are some of the big differences between my opponent and myself. I have a BS degree from Utah State University and a PhD from Rutgers University. I worked in research and later became the Director of Research for a large agribusiness. I then moved on to senior management positions for several major corporations. In each of these positions I managed large budgets arid large groups of employees. I have worked and lived in different areas of the United States and have worked in many countries around the world. I have also worked for myself as a private consultant. While working in the health, safety and environmental areas, I worked closely with government agencies at the federal, state and local levels. I have testified before Congress; I was appointed to a number of government committees; the Governor of Nevada appointed me to the State Emergency Response Commission. I have dealt with and helped settle a number of significant lawsuits. I have a vast amount of knowledge and experience on how to get things done in government circles. I have learned what it takes to make government work for those it is intended to serve. Let me put this ability, knowledge and experience to work for you. Summit County Council Seat B Claudia McMullin Grant Richins Democrat Republican The key difference between me and my opponent, Grant Richins, is that I understand and agree with the core values of the majority of this County's population. My opponent does not. First, Mr. Richins does not support open space. The residents of Park City and the Basin overwhelmingly support open space as evidenced by the fact that they have chosen to repeatedly tax themselves to pay for open space. Open space is a core value shared by the majority of the population of Summit County - but, not Mr. Richins. Second, Mr. Richins, believes that our development codes are too restrictive and supports increased density, Again, this position is counter to another core value of the majority of the population. I believe that the Snyderville Basin Development Code is appropriately restrictive. Finally, Mr. Richins believes that we should geographically limit our search for County Manager to Summit County. I completely disagree. For this critical position, in order to attract the best candidates and generate a sufficient pool of qualified applicants, recruitment should be nationwide and should not be geographically limitdSfi '"£K\.'•'-. j > In sum, Mr. Richins will not represent this County's population. I will. Please vote for Claudia! for County Council, Seat B. "*' j The only knowledge I have of my opponent is what I have read in her flyer and heard her express. What sets me apart as a candidate for county council is that I have been a lifetime resident of Summit County and all of my children and grandchildren live in the county. My heart is invested in seeing the future of our county preserved. Years of service in the school district, town council, town planning commission and Olympic planning committee have given me a broader view of what our county needs to protect our unique way of life. I have dealt with the management of public funds, with negotiations, personnel, and with legal issues and codes facing our county, and I believe my long-term approach to decision making will prove to be the most valuable reason for my election to the County Council. Summit County Council Seat C 3 P John Hanrahan Tom Hurd Democrat Republican First, I respect Tom Hurd for running, stating his views, and for a respectfiil and issue based campaign. We do have differences on issues. Probably the greatest difference is open space acquisition. I have been a staunch supporter of open space bonds over the years, and the Park City walkability bond last year (it passed 82-18%). My opponent staunchly opposed these and remains opposed to spending funds to purchase 340 acres of open space in Round Valley, and 340 acres at JCimball Junction between the Hi Ute ranch and Olympic Park. These funds have already been committed by voters. I believe open space gives all of us a better quality of life by decreasing traffic, congestion, and pollution and increasing trails, wildlife and beauty. Removing residential units saves taxpayer money as residential does not pay for the infrastructure needs it generates. Open space keeps tourists returning and expands tourism, the biggest economic engine in Summit County. Tourists deal with less traffic, and enjoy a more beautiful resort area on the West Side for future visits and potential second home purchase. If elected I will work hard on your behalf with integrity, openness and honesty. Vote for John Hanrahan, MD John and I want only the best for Summit County; we have no differences there. I have a few more years behind me and I do tend to look at the role of government in a more conservative and less activist way. In a nutshell I believe that they who govern least govern best. John is uncomfortable with my position that all meetings, with rare exception, should be open to the public. I know this is a departure from current city and county thinking but it is my position. John wants to buy more "open space". When I look out I see open space everywhere - ski hills, golf courses and land devoted to agriculture. We need to encourage private owners to maintain their open space, not encourage them to sell through buyouts. John says buying "open space" through bonding is like the mortgage on his house but that was his personal decision. I think municipal bonding is a mortgage on the future to be paid by persons yet'unknown so we can gratify our immediate desires. I am a voice for fiscal responsibility, tax reform and more open government. I ask for your vote. t 4 I • s II 3 3 3 Summit County Council Seat D Chris Robinson Alison Pitt Gary Shumway Democrat Republican Constitution First. I want to thank and congratulate both of my opponents, Alison Pitt and Gary Shumway, for getting involved. I've enjoyed getting to know them through this campaign and hope to be friends for a long time to come, regardless of Tuesday's outcome. I have tremendous respect for anyone willing to step up and enter the fray. Both of my opponents are highly educated with multiple master's degrees. My formal education stopped after I graduated with a bachelor's in accounting from the U of U in 1986. But my informal education and experience has been priceless and rich. For the last 22 years, I've been involved with countless transactions, negotiations, projects, undertakings, enterprises, groups, boards, and campaigns dealing with real estate, land use, energy, minerals, water, agriculture, manufacturing, marketing, sport, wildlife, conservation, philanthropy, and community. I've made a lot of great friends and I've gained a lot of knowledge and judgment. I'm a very good listener. I'm very even-tempered and deliberate. And I seek common ground and win-win compromises. My skills and temperament are ideally suited to the job of being a county council person. The biggest differentiation is that I believe the Council represents not only a change in the form of government, but its manner of governance. I pledge to improve agenda notice, information provided at meetings and on the web, and the customer service levels of all County officials and staff. Meetings should be moved to the evening. I believe the power of the new manager must be balanced by increased opportunities for public participation. Unlike my opponents, I propose to use volunteer community councils to provide ongoing input in advance of decisions. Mr. Robinson touts his experience of dealing with land use and water law. However, this experience is from the perspective of a large property owner interacting with staff and consultants under the old form of government. This is exactly the opposite of the new perspective and openness to fresh ideas that I will bring to the Council. Mr. Shumway and I agree on one issue-that local government races should not be partisan and that people should vote for the most qualified candidate, not the party - but I am the better candidate because I bring a unique perspective and a desire to lead a diverse County. I am offering you a choice this November 4th. You have a choice of continuing politics as usual or you can elect a member of the Constitution Party who will actually represent you, not just the party. With no political debts to repay, with no close ties to any specific industry, special interest group, or political entity, I can represent all the citizens of Summit County. Succinctly, I am fiscally conservative and socially inclusive. I believe our human rights come from God, not government. I believe the Constitution to be the supreme law of the land and we have strayed too far from it. I believe we must reign in government or government will reign over us. Unlike Chris Robinson who states his company has "a broad range of interests" and Alison Pitt who works for a Summit County business and is married to a Park City Attorney, I have no business dealings with the County (other than paying taxes!) I will not have to recluse myself from doing County business, that is, your business, due to conflicts of interest. Electing Gary Shumway means you are paying for five and you will get five Council members voting for you. |
