Show A-15 The Park Record -Sat/Sun/Mon/Tues, November 1-4, 2008 Child identification kits distributed statewide Submitted by The Summit Group Salt Lake City, U T - According to the National Childhood Identification Program, it is estimated that every 40 seconds one child becomes lost or goes missing. To help combat this national crisis in Utah, local SUBWAY® restaurants have partnered with the Salt Lake City Police Department to launch a Child ID campaign designed to help parents obtain vital information about their children that can help police in the event their child becomes lost or goes missing. Beginning Thursday, October 30, all SUBWAY® restaurants throughout Utah will be stocked with Child ID Kits, which are available to the public at no cost. Parents are encouraged to use these kits to document their child's vital information such as fingerprints, dental records, an updated photo and distinguishing marks like scars or birthmarks. "The first three hours a child goes missing are the most critical and compiling valuable information in one central place will provide police with the information they need quickly," said Sergeant Fred Ross, Salt Lake City Police Department. "Having a missing child is never an easy time for parents. By having this information prepared ahead of time, parents don't have to worry about collecting significant details that can often be hard to remember under stress." This is the second annual Child ID campaign in Utah. With success and response from local communities and families, Utah franchisees have elected to distribute twice as many kits during the 2008. With help from the Salt Lake City Police Department, SUBWAY® hopes to distribute as many kits as possible. "Last year's Child ID campaign was tremendously successful and we want to distribute Child ID Kits to twice as many Utah families and kids this year," said Robert Sherwood, board chair for SUBWAY® of Utah. "As local franchisees, we all have families, neighbors and friends we want to keep safe. We hope these kits are a great way to raise awareness and encourage a healthy and safe message among our communities." The Child ID Kits will be made available to the public in all Utah SUBWAY® locations as long as supplies last. "The new regulations are going to hamstring (card companies') ability to manage accounts the way they have in the past," said John Ulzheimer, president of consumer education for Credit.com. To protect your credit score through these times, keep these points in mind. On Citigroup Inc.'s financial literacy Web site for consumers (www.usecreditwisely.com), the company also suggests immediately notifying companies whenever you move so bills aren't late. Other measures you can take are obvious: Pay your bills on time and whittle down debt as much as possible. Negotiation better terms The first step is to read any mail from your credit card company. Notification of new terms may also be included in your monthly statement. If your bank hits you with a higher interest rate, call and ask it to reconsider if you think the change is undeserved. Ask the customer service representative if he has the authority to make changes to your terms. If not, ask to speak to a supervisor who does1, said the ABA's Kaplan. "Tell them how long you've been a customer for and explain what went wrong. You can achieve a lot just by calling and being reasonable," she said.If you're not satisfied, you can always get rid of the card. Banks typically let customers pay off balances at their old rates, so long as they shut down the account. If your account is being closed, think carefully before asking the issuer to re-evaluate the decision. That technically counts as an application for new credit and may end up hurting your credit score. For those with great credit and low balances, remember that credit card companies are fighting to hold onto you so it may pay to shop around. WE'RE BACK!
