Show B-7 |77ie Park Record Sat/Sun/Mon/Tues, March 29 - April 1, 2008 Freestyle national finals underway • Continued from B-1 NATIONALS FEATURE HOMETOWN FAVORITES plenty of time to relax and refocus for Friday's halfpipe competition. Hudack is the reigning U.S. ski halfpipe champion and should challenge for the national crown if she lays down one of her winning runs at Park City Mountain Resort. Hudack will likely throw an alleyoop 540, a trick shefinallynailed at the X-Games and has been using in competition ever since. In layman's terms that is rotating the same direction as the side of the wall. For Hudack, she will be rotating left on the left side of the wall and basically spinning uphill. Trying new things for Hudack has worked out well. She also embarked on her first season without a sponsor. It has allowed her a chance to try new skis and even a new attitude. "It's hard to be without a sponsor. You want to show them they made a mistake," she said. But it also gave her freedom. "I think there was pressure lifted from me," Hudack said. "This year I had nothing to lose. I wanted to prove myself and show I was still a force in this sport." . Hudack is excited be competing in Park City because it gives her a rare opportunity lo perform for her friends. With no World Cups in Park City and no women's skiing division in the World Superpipe Championships, this is the one and only time this season that Hudack will be able to compete at home. Aerialist Ryan St. Onge is also happy to be competing at home. The Winter Park, Colo, native has been living in Park City the past few years and has his family not far away. Most of the St. Onge clan made the day's drive to Park City for Thursday aerials competition and he also expects many of his local friends to show up. "It's a house full," he said. "It brings more excitement to the day. It makes you really want to show off when you get a big crowd." St. Onge didn't disappoint the Colorado fan club winning the national title even 'though he didn't throw his newest trick, the full-full, double-full, instead sticking to a less risky combination. St. Onge has been steadily building towards the big finish. He had a top-10 finish in Lake Placid and then third in Japan. "The season was certainly rough." he said. "But I'm feeling better now than 1 have all year." It's nice going into the summer jumping at my best." He says that the beauty of the national championships is the atmosphere - its a chance to have fun with teammates, while at the same time vying for the very prestigious title of national champion. get my stuff together and try and squeak it out.
