SPORTS EDITOR: ADIA WALDBURGER 649-9014 ext.113 sports'S'parkrecord.com Cook, St. Onge claim national crowns after waiting out stormy start to competition By ADIA WALDBURGER Of the Record staff It's hard to believe that the day began in a blinding snowstorm, because it ended with beautiful skies and stunning performances at the aerials portion of the Sprint U.S. Freestyle Championships. Emily Cook (Belmont, Mass.) and Ryan St. Onge (Winter Park. Colo.) both twisted and turned their way into national champions in front of a crowd of loyal family and friends. The weather did put a bit of a damper on the day, pushing back the competition an hour or two. It also limited the degree of difficulty for the aerialists. That meant only doubles, no triples. St. Onge had planned to perform either a new trick or one of his 0I4 stand-bys, both of which are triples. He was challenged by Internationa! Ski Federation (FIS) Rookie of the Year Scotty Bahrke (Tahoe City, Calif.) for the national title, but still managed to pull out the win. "I knew at the beginning of the competition that it would be a challenge to overtake these guys," St. Onge said. Cook seemed to take the adjustments in stride, landing two big jumps for the third national title of his career. "It's been an amazing season, Cook said. "To be competing at our home venue in Park City is really good." Cook did a full-full and a full-double-full to capture the win and says that she approaches every competition with the same focused mindset. "The weather was really tricky today," she said. "We had snow and wind and it's hard to gauge where to start and what your speeds were going to be. We rely a lot on our coaches, who did an amazing job to help us decide where to start... It's great to come out here, throw my biggest tricks in difficult conditions, and end up on the podium." Behind Cook was FIS World Cup Rookie of the Year Allison Treleaven who finished with a score pf 151.10. The Indiana native came to the sport from a gymnastics background, which helped her to compile two winning combinations. After feeling trapped for years by his two Nordic skis, the 19-year-old ski jumper was finally able to shake the shackles of his extra ski. "There is nothing so confining as two skis," said On-One. "When I lost that other ski I wanted to dance with glee." On-one has grown up competing in the family sport of ski jumping. His father has coached the sport and his sister continues to compete, but On-One said he never felt that close to them because they insisted on two skis whenever they were jumping. On-One said he played along for years, methodically strapping both feet in day after day, while secretly resenting that his right leg had to be weighted down by a second ski. It all happened years ago during a family beach vacation when On-one watched a seagull with a broken leg take flight.
