Soon a handful of pretzels made their way into her hands, staying only briefly before they went flying at Netherlands's face. "I don't know what came over me," Ihousen said. "I was on such an emotional high from speaking to the board that it was like a primal instinct kicked in or something. I needed to retaliate." A handful of pretzels led to a few more cookie and soon even the board members were joining in the raucous. Board member David Chappin, a very mild-mannered man, tried at first to stop the fighting. "I couldn't believe what I was seeing," he said. '"At first it was like everyone was taking out their frustrations on each other, but then, after a while, I think people started enjoying themselves." Not everyone was having fun, however. Director of Support Services Steve Twist was not a happy camper about the food fight. "I just bought this shirt a few days ago, and, now look at it, frosting and crumbs all over it," he said. "I never thought I would see something like this happen at a board meeting." After a good 5 minutes of fighting, Superintendent Hey Tuknowme stood on his chair, megaphone in hand - how he found a megaphone in less than five minutes is still a mystery shouting at everyone to sit down and stop acting like crazed children. The room fell silent, It was like a spell had been lifted. Parents, teachers, principals and administrators looked around at each other with awed and confused expressions. Slowly they returned to their food-stained seats as Carryon called the meeting back to order. The board decided to finish public comment before adjourning for a short break to clean up.
