This year's Edwina Awards will take place on Saturday, Nov. 5, at 7 p.m. at the Egyptian Theatre. For the first time this year, there will be a $10 per-person charge for the event. The fee was instituted to make sure those who make reservations appear for the show, and the $10 can be applied toward the purchase of any season subscription. Company's will hold annual season kickoff and awards next weekend Timpanogos Valley Theatre Company show starts next week By MATT JAMES The Timpanogos Valley Theatre Company will present its fall performance, the comic melodrama "Arsenic and Old Lace," Nov. 11, 12, 14, 17 and 18 at the Midway Town Hall, located at 120 West Main Street in Midway, Utah. Featuring a local cast, the show will begin each night at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at the Heber City Chamber of Commerce, Day's Market, Kings department store and Heber Valley National Bank. The Silver Queen Quilters will meet Tuesday, Nov. 8 at 7 p.m. in the Miners Hospital's main floor room for a demonstration and business session. The evening will begin with a demonstration, led by local quilter Truddi Greene. She will show the group how to make an easy "Slice and Dice" table runner. The business meeting will take place immediately before the class. All interested quilters and guests are invited. Bring a sewing machine and other supplies if you want to work along. Cartoonist Pat Bagley coming to the Spotted Frog On Tuesday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. the Spotted Frog Bookstore will hold a book signing and wine reception for cartoonist Pat Bagley. He will be talking about his new work, "Clueless George Goes to War," about George W. Bush's terms as president. The event is free and open to the public. Park City Ambassadors' Snowflaker's Ball is coming up The Park City Ambassadors will host their 28th annual "Snowflaker's Ball Winter Elegance" on Saturday, Nov. 19 at 6:30 p.m. at the Park City Marriott Hotel, located at 1895 Sidewinder Drive. Attendees are encouraged to wear white attire and hope for snow. Tickets to the event are $35, and hotel rooms will be available to ball-goers at discounted rates. For reservations or more information, call Saundie Stone at 6159767. Of the Record staff The Egyptian Theatre Company's 2005 season is about to come to a close, and November has just begun. That means the Edwina Awards are upon us. The theatre company's seventh annual awards night and season kickoff will take place this Saturday. Nov. 5 at 7 p.m. in the Egyptian Theatre. As always the event will include the Edwinas - advertised as the Egyptian's version of the Tonys - and a complete run-down of the upcoming 2006 season, which is the theatre company's 25th anniversary. "This year we're highlighting our 25lh anniversary, so we're looking back at what we've done," said Dana Durbano Keiler. "We're going to spend a bit of time bringing back the shows we've done over the last 25 years, and a bit about what we're doing this year," said theatre company board member Debbie Walsh. The show itself will also include a number from "Seusical the Musical." the theatre company's latest play, which is currently in rehearsal. Egyptian regular and Edwina Awards advertisement poster boy Marc Raymond will emcee the show. For the first time, there will be a $10 charge to attend. According to Betsy Shotwell Smith, a member of the Egyptian Theatre Company board of directors and the event's organizer, the fee is to prevenl people from making reservations and not showing up for the show, which was a problem in the past. This way theatre company hopes to have a person coming for each reservation. "Jesus Christ Super Star" and "La Cage aux Folles." There will be six categories, best leading actor, best leading actress, best supporting actor, best supporting actress. excellence in design (for designing sets, lighting or costumes), and excellence in direction/choreography. Additionally, for the first time, the Egyptian will give awards - golden turkey statuettes - for the "best" of the 2005 "'Park City Follies." There will be turkeys for best act. best actress or actor and best script writer. The awards ceremony and show, how- ever, will be just a part of the evening. The event will start with cocktails and hors d'oeuvres in the theatre lobby, followed by the show and awards ceremony in the theatre. A third-floor reception will conclude the evening. Catering will be provided by Done to Your Taste. "It's an annual open house that we have for our patrons." said Smith. The evening's main purpose, she added, is to promote the Egyptian's annual subscription drive. The subscription drive offers Egyptian patrons u chance to purchase one of two season subscriptions. One of Merrill's oil paintings, "Red Rock Sunrise," is shown below. The establishment, which is pictured at left, will carry pieces from several local artists, including Peg Bodell, Janet Johnson and Dori Pratt. Local artist's new gallery will feature his works, those of others By MATT JAMES Of the Record staff Walk past the Main Street Mall later in the week, and you might see an older gentleman sitting in a window, painting. A few weeks ago, local artist David Merrill opened up a new Main Street art establishment, David Merrill Studio & Gallery, and in one corner of the gallery space, he made an area where he can paint, every week, Wednesday through Sunday. That way, he said he can run the gallery and create his art at the same time. "Why not combine the two?" he said. "Multi-tasking." Located in the space that formerly housed Cowboy Culture, Merrill's gallery is home to his work and that of several other local artists, including Willie Holdman, of Lindon, and Parkiles Peg Bodell, Janet Johnson and Dori Pratt. According to Merrill, while he owns the gallery, the business will work a bit like a co-op, with each of the participating artists putting in shifts on the gallery floor in return for a larger return on their works. By using the artists as staff members and working a significant portion of the time himself, he said he's reducing his overhead dramatically, while at the same IMAGES COURTESY OF DAVID MERRILL time, putting the people who can best explain the works - the artists who make them - in charge of the sales. At the same time, with dozens of local connections, the group should be able to create a bit of its own momentum. "I just decided I could take a little bit about what was valuable from the coops," said Merrill. He has some experience with the cooperative concept, first working in Park City Art during its run from July 2003 to April 2004 and then taking part in the newer Local Art Co-op this past summer.
