Show Wed/Thurs/Fri, November 2-4, 2005 The Park Record A-4 Firefighters torch house in Oakley Firefighters from the South Summit Rre District watch Saturday as a house burns in Oakley. The structure sat on a roughly 35-acre parcel of land owned by the South Summit School District near The Wentworth and S.tf. 32. The school district allowed firefighters and the Summit County Sheriff's Office to train in the building last summer if the fire department would destroy the house at the end of the season, South Summit Rre Chief Mark Fry said, adding, "we burned it completely down." The land could become the site of a new school, said Zane Woolstenhulme, business administrator for South Summit Schools. FRE.L DINNLR LNTRLL Winner of the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence. '"In time, the role of the County Commission will diminish," County Commissioner Bob Richer said. The commission has governed Mountain Regional since the special service district formed several years ago. According to Richer, several lawsuits pending against Mountain Regional could be resolved by the end of the year. The public water entity has been controversial since the county went $30 million in debt six years ago to create it. Commissioners spent the money purchasing water companies throughout the Snyderville Basin in an attempt to regionalize water service in the area. Employees at the private Summit Water Distribution Company, some of the county's harshest critics, say Mountain Regional is failing because the debt has forced Mountain Regional's companies to pay seven times as much as Summit Water's. Summit County Public Works officials say. Motorists are advised to only turn right onto the highway from Sun Peak Drive and Old Ranch Road, Public Works Administrator Kevin Callahan said. "We would just advise people to be cautious about that ... rather than try and make a left across the road," he said. "We're starting to get into wet winter weather and the stopping distance is going to change." The realignment of Old Ranch Road with Sun Peak Drive was completed several weeks ago but a traffic signal won't likely be operational at the new intersection until the end of November, he added. "We apologize for the delay, it's circumstances beyond the county's control," Callahan said. Cutter Lane could open this week As Snyderville Basin Water Reclamation District employees continue to rumble through West Side neighborhoods installing a new sewer line, district officials Tuesday expected to open a section of Cutter Lane that has been closed for construction since Oct. 25. According to a press release, after working around a utility line in the area, crews expected part of the road near the S.R. 224 connector trail to open Nov. 1 at 7 p.m. For more information about the East Canyon trunkline project contact project manager David Actor at 214-5235. Restaurant Tax seats filled The Summit County Comrpissjqn, appointed four people last week.to serve three-year terms of the Restaurant Tax Advisory Committee. Terms for Laura Murphy, Eileen Dunn, Jerry Gilomen and Colleen Sargent will expire in June 2008. Sheriff 's Office buys ski boat Other than a barge used to operate underwater search equipment, the Summit County Sheriff's Office Search and Rescue team doesn't have a boat for searching lakes. "We're using search-and-rescue members' boats to effect water rescues," Summit County sheriff's Captain Alan Siddoway said. "We need a more rapidresponse boat." Last week, the Summit County Commission approved the purchase of an 18-foot Renegade jet boat for the search team, which can be used in about a foot of water. Deputies used S28.290 of funds donated to the search team to purchase the boat, Siddoway said.
