This might seem a little low for a district that is routinely called the best in Utah, but sets goals for one that wants to be one of the 10 best in the United States. The Park City Education Foundation (PCEF) released this report card this week, judging the school district according to 10 criteria it has been assembling for months. "What we were basically trying to come up with were goals with an ABC range which would indicate a school district is exemplary and providing for all the kids," said Lynn Heinlein, the foundation's executive director. "I think we do a really great job and it's good to evaluate these things to see how we should deploy our resources."t Although there are independent agencies which evaluate schools and tests which evaluate students, no definitive source judges school districts. So the education foundation formed its own criteria for what a "top 10" district is, and corresponding goals, based on many existing measures of student success. "There wasn't a template to follow," said Kathy Shurtleff, a member of the assessment committee. "I don't know that we're creating our own criteria, we're looking at other schools that are successful and bring .that in to the Park City School District." GRAYSON WEST/PARK RECORD Soaring Wings Montessori students Halle Shaw, 4, and Rose McLaughlin, 5, show off some pumpkins they found on their school's pumpkin hunt on Halloween. Soaring Wings students skulked through the Park City Library, following a trail of clues, until they found a pumpkin patch. Park City public schools had their Halloween fun on Friday, not Monday. Halloween is "so fun when we get to go trick or treating and get all those candies," said McLaughlin, who dressed as Supergirl "because I love my costume." PCEF Week seeks to raise funds, reach community with Harry Potter, others By JARED WHITLEY Of the Record staff The Park City Education Foundation is bringing the magic back. As always in November, the fundraising arm of the school district is holding PCEF Week. Running from Nov. 14 to 18, the foundation aims to raise money and share its goals with the community. And Harry Potter will help again. Like last year, PCEF Week will start on Nov. 14 with a reading' event, where PCEF staff and local glitterati will read in the four elementary schools and the two local libraries. This year celebrity readers include the Intermountain Therapy dogs and Park City author Jeannine Heil, who will read her book "No Time for That Now." It will end with a benefit ski day at Park City Mountain Resort on that Friday, the day before the resort's scheduled opening day. PCMR is donating all proceeds from lift tickets to the foundation. Tickets are $20 and are available at Jan's Mountain Outfitters, Cole Sport, Zions Bank, and Canyons Sports. The highlight of the week is a visit from Jay Matthews, the Washington Post education reporter who developed Newsweek's formula for gauging the 200 best high schools in the country: the number of Advanced Placement (AP) and/or International Baccalaureate (IB) tests taken by all students at a' school in 2004, divided by the number of graduating seniors. This year, Park City High School was named No. 150. In crafting its "report card" (see accompanying story), Park City Education Foundation officials Nancy DeFord and Mark Fischer met and worked with Matthews. "Because he's done so much research and been involved in so many schools, he gave us some good ideas of good criteria to evaluate and how school districts are addressing kids,"" said Lynn Heinlein, foundation executive director. On Nov. 15, Matthews will join the foundation for a community symposium Please see Newsweek's, A-10 33rd Annual Park Cft CONNECT THE DOTS...
