It's throwing a party. "It's the first time we've done this, and it's a masquerade," said Dana Durbano Keiter, artistic director at the Theatre Company. "Costumes are optional," she said, "but masks are a must." The event is called "A Maskcrade Party!" and it will take place on Saturday, Oct. 8 at the Egyptian Theatre. "Last year we actually had a show during Halloween and we thought about doing that again, but we decided, even if we don't get funding for a show, we're doing something," said Keiter. "Initially we are doing it because we did offer an October event to our First Nighter subscribers," said Debbie Walsh, president of the Egyptian's board of trustees. "We've been thinking for a number of years, 'What better organization than ours to host a community Halloween party." When a postmodern jazz trio like The Bad Plus reaches a point of musical proficiency that is virtually inhuman, it can be difficult for some people to relate to or understand exactly what they are doing. But the band seems to have found some interesting ways of sidestepping that problem. By deconstructing mainstream pop tunes like "Heart of Glass" by Blondie, they sort of "throw a bone" out to those who may not have the knowledge of music to really understand what's happening with time signatures and key changes. They don't, however, loose any of their appeal in doing so. All three bad plus albums are The drive-in screenings will be held in the First Time parking lot on a 65-foot-wide outdoor screen. Here's the trick. By altering the songs that they cover and making them much more interesting on a musical level than they were before, the band lends new life to them. At the same time, the groups originals take on a sort of groovy psychedelic-pop sound. "Suspicious Activity?." the newest release from the trio, is perhaps the best representation of these ideas. It's insanely catchy and at the same time, musically brilliant - far too rare an occurrence. I N E Underwrircen liv Melissa Puff Nihlcv &* Frank Nnrniile of RF.M. During the party, there will also be a competition for the best masks in three categories, the "Witch Crafty Creative Award," the "Freakishly Funny Award" and the "Boogie Bag Award." Those who come without masks will be given bags to decorate, which they can wear on their heads. The "Boogie Bag Award" is for the best decorated bag. Keiter said the event is open to all. "It's not a fundraiser," she said. "It's just a Halloween event." The Egyptian has designed the party to give Parkites an opportunity to dress up and celebrate together, she added. "We're testing the waters," said Keiter. "and if this works out well, we'll decorate the basement and do a haunted house on the way up." "We've never done anything like this before," added Walsh. "We expect having a real good lime; we expect dancing in the aisles, and we expect people will have fun." "A Maskcrade Party!" begins at 8 p.m. on Oct. 8. The party is for those ages 21 and over only. According the Jessica Kunzer, director of development and promotion at the Egyptian, the Utah Ghost'Hunting Society visited the theatre in 2003 and said it has three ghosts. One is an older man, Johnny; he is the resident angry ghost, supposedly a projectionist al the Egyptian in the 1920s who died outside the building defending his brother in a fight. Another is a littie boy who can be .heard running in the rafters or giggling in the basement. The most famous, of course, is Edwina, after whom the Theatre Company's .annual awards are named. "She was supposedly an actress who was trappecTin the building when it burned down in 1898," said Kunzer. According to Egyptian staffmembers, Edwina will occasionally talk to people in the theatre late at night, and, according to Kunzer, she is fond of B.B. King. "We're going to be having ghost tours," said Keiter, Throughout the evening docents will guide guests through the theatre to see the places where the ghosts may be found. Otherwise, Motheriode Canyon Band will play the party, and Keiter promised there would be dancing and plenty of food.
