Park City rules Region 10 Miners grab a close one in overtime to Wasatch, 2-1 By APIA WALDBURGER Of the Record staff Perhaps what sets a nationally ranked team from other teams is endurance. For the Park City Miners girls soccer, it was the power to endure injury, sickness and weaker competition, and still emerge victorious in their final region match beating the Wasatch Wasps 2-1 in overtime in Heber. The win earns Park City a Region 10 championship and puts the Miners at 14-0 for the season. The team is currently ranked 13th in the nation by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). Wasatch entered the game with motivation on their side. If the Wasps won the game, they would finish in second place in region behind the Miners. Their drive was evident in their spirited play, and a goal scored within the first 20 minutes of the match. "They came into the game thinking they were so excited to play,'1 said Miners team captain Marlee Davis. "Their motivation level was much higher, but then we were able to pull it together, because we couldn't afford to lose." Things were not so bright for the Miners. According to head coach Chip Cook, about eight players were battling respiratory illnesses and a large group of girls were out with various injuries. Reigning 3A MVP Kelly Islieb left 15 minutes into the game for a recruiting trip to Pepperdine. The depleted lineup forced the coaching staff to change personnel and schemes and affected organization for the first half of the game. "We weren't on lop of it at all. We weren't moving the ball at all. We weren't winning 50-50 balls," Cook said. In the second half, Cook switched to a different scheme which allowed the Miners to shore up holes in the middle.
