Show C-3 The Park Record Sat/Sun/Mon/Tues, April 2-5, 2005 Park City book enters second run Local author to hold book signing at the Spotted Frog By MATT JAMES Of the Record staff Park City's history is a vivid one, an active one. The town has leapt to great heights, fallen just as far, and risen again, only to leap higher, move faster. And while organizations like the Park City Museum work to chronicle that history, there were few comprehensive books about the town's past. But last year, Larry Warren added one to the list. His contribution to the area's cannon was "Park City Mountain of Treasure," a large, sharply pictured and clearly written coffee-table book which details the area's history from, "bare ground," as Warren says, to the present day. "There's really never been a book published like this" Warren said. "It filled a niche." Mountain Sports Press published the volume in the fall of 2003, just in advance of the ski season, and provided the book-buying public with an indepth view of the town's and Park City Mountain Resort's history, but due to a small publishing run, the book disappeared quickly. "It came out; it sold well and it pretty much disappeared this year," said Warren. The book's original publisher, Mountain Sports Press, was owned by the same company as Ski Magazine and Skiing Magazine, and as Warren explained, the company decided to stop making books; "Park City Mountain of Treasure," was their last, so its run was cut short. But with the ever-demanding tourists and a burgeoning population of second-home owners. Warren believed the l?ook still had a market, so he found a new, publisher, Mountain Press, and printed a second edition. According to Warren, the book remains unchanged, save for correcting a few typos and some other small details. The new edition was released a short while ago and is now available. "It's kind of gone into stores quietly," said Warren. Warren made his name as a news anchor for Salt Lake City's CBS affiliate, KUTV, Channel 2, and now works part-time as a newscaster for Channel 4, KTVX, but the book, he said, originated from a show Warren made for Salt Lake City's PBS station, KUEQ. "It grew out of a film I did called 'Silvan and Snow, the Park Citydocu^ meritaryr Warren'explained. "If you're a newcomer, it's the story of the town," concluded Warren. With his career as a broadcaster now on a slower track than it was previously. Warren said the book has inspired him. "It whetted my appetite," he said. "Fm pitching another idea to publishers." He declined to say exactly what that book might be about, other than noting it would be similar to "Park City Mountain of Treasure," but would focus elsewhere in the Wasatch. For now, Warren is working on promoting his current work. To begin his promotional efforts for "Park City Mountain of Treasure's" new printing. Warren will present a slide-show and book signing next Saturday, April 9 at The Spotted Frog Bookstore in Redstone Village from 7-9 p.m. For more information, contact the bookstore at 575-2665.
