The 1991 Geography Olympiad for the northern region was held March 15 at Weber State University. Univer-sity. Students from Davis County junior high schools performed so well in competition that they carried away all but one medal. There were 1 8 medals awarded to individual students and four-1 four-1 member teams in Human Geog raphy, Physical Geography, Maps-Graphs Maps-Graphs -Location, Individual Composite, Com-posite, Team Composite and , Orienteering Team, according to Gail Bock, who directs the social studies curriculum for the district. In this fourth year of competition there were five regions competing. In the northern region Weber, Davis and Morgan districts competed with around 25 teams coming from 18 schools. Richard Malmstrom, South Davis Junior High, and Tom Anderson ' : from Bountiful Junior High each won three medals. Kaysville Junior High's Team A came away with two team medals, and the South Davis Junior High Team B won two , medals. Ken Maxwell from Centerville Junior High, Avery Waller and Adam Law from Kaysville Junior High, John Call from South Davis Junior High and Sarah Barney from Syracuse Junior High also won medals. Central Davis Junior High Team A and Centerville Junior High Team B were other team medal winners. The Geography Olympiad is sponsored by the Utah Geographic Alliance, which is an arm of the National Geographic Society's educational edu-cational program. According to Kim Hadfield, who is a leader in geography programs in the state and coach of the Kaysville Junior High team, ''Utah's program was created by Dr. Wayne Wahlquist from Weber State University and he has1 received inquiries from other statef1 wishing to initiate similar competi-' lions." Hadfield spends around 30 hours coaching the team at Kaysville Junior Ju-nior High School in addition to his regular classroom assignments, which is typical of the teachers-coaches teachers-coaches commitments. "Not only does competition generate interest among students who compete for selection to the school team, but students who travel to Weber State University benefit from tours of the school facilities and programs which orient them to the |
