Wildcat coach Steve Lindsay said the win was due mainly to senior pitcher Mike Gurr's performance perfor-mance from the mound. ' 'We had some excellent pitching from Mike, who returned from an arm injury and a chronic back problem, prob-lem, and we had a couple of clutch hits that made the difference," Lindsay said. The 'Cats had to claw their way back from behind in the bottom of the sixth to beat the Bulldogs. Trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth, the 'Cats scored two runs to tie the game. SEE BASEBALL ON A-10 By G.BRETT HART Sports Editor WASHINGTON TERRACE TER-RACE Five key errors nearly earned Davis its first region loss of the season to the Bonneville Lakers Friday, but the Darts survived to take the 8-7 win. "We didn't play well defensively," defensive-ly," Davis coach Val Cullimore said. After a two-run homer by Davis' Brad Palmer in the third, the Darts led Bonneville 6-1. However, four crucial errors in the ensuing innings gave the Lakers a shot at the game. "Our pitchers did a good job. They didn't have a single earned run," Cullimore added. The Darts are now 3-0 in Region 1 action. BOUNTIFUL This week also featured two key cross-county matchups between Davis and Viewmont high schools, in Region 1 competition, and Woods Cross and Bountiful in Region 6 action. Davis knocked off Viewmont while the Braves battered the Wildcats; however, Woods Cross recovered from Tuesday's loss to Bountiful to overcome Judge Thursday. Meanwhile on Thursday, Bountiful faltered against West. DAVIS 3, VIEWMONT 1 At Kaysville, the Darts upped their region record to 2-0 at the expense ex-pense of the Viewmont Vikings. The low-scoring bout became a pitching duel between Davis' Ryan Sprague and Viking Jason Jarvis. The Vikes' only run crossed the plate in the first inning on a Troy Bumingham RBI, but neither team could generate another run until the bottom of the fourth. By then, it was all Davis. Viewmont did have scoring opportunities op-portunities in the second and sixth innings but couldn't convert them into points. Davis, on the other hand, earned their first run of the afternoon in the fourth as Nate Richardson crossed the plate on a Scott Patrick double. Davis took the lead for good in the fifth when Troy Osborn took advantage of a passed ball on the third strike and a two-base error advanced ad-vanced Jeremy Lawson to second and Osbom to third. Brad Palmer followed with a two-run single. Errors cost the Vikes the game as Viewmont logged 2, while Davis played flawlessly. Viewmont, however, did outhit the Darts 4-3. Baseball CONTINUED FROM A-9 While Judge remained scoreless in the sixth, Woods Cross mustered the go-ahead run to win their first region bout in three tries. Judge also sports a 3-1 region standing. "We just played better than we did against Bountiful. We still made some defensive mistakes," Lindsay reported. 'We're slowly working our way back where we want to be. ' 'If Mike can come back and stay in the rotation, it will really help. I don't think they had an earned run Thursday. ' The 'Cats outhit the 'Dogs 10-9 but logged two errors to Judge's one. WEST 11, BOUNTIFUL 5 At Bountiful, the Braves gave up 10 runs in the first two innings en route to their second Region 6 loss of the season in four tries. "We just couldn't get them out in the first two innings," Bountiful coach Phil Olson said. The Braves cut the Panther lead to 5 by the end of the third period, 10-5, but that was as close as the Braves would come. Matt Cluff relieved Brian Dawson and refused to give up a hit for five innings in the Braves losing los-ing bout. Offensively, Scott Erickson and Mark Schaffer both logged triples for Bountiful. The Panthers outhit the Braves 14-8 Thursday, while both teams logged two errors. "It was one of the weirdest games I've seen; I've never seen anything like it," Olson said.
