Show Bountiful OK's joining flood program becoming a part of the rating system to secure loans for constructing construc-ting new dwellings. The council voted unanimously to approve participation in the program pro-gram to save taxpayers money and to enhance future federal funding. By PAUL CHALLIS BOUNTIFUL Approval for participation in the community rating system for the National Flood Insurance Program was recently given by the Bountiful City Council. Coun-cil. City Engineer Jack Balling told the council it needed to approve the action so those constructing buildings in the flood zones could get financial assistance and the city could get certified points in reducing reduc-ing its flood rating. Balling said the city had done its part in putting flood prevention booklets in the local library to help citizens prepare for flooding and to learn how to avoid flood damage. The city has also tried to preserve open spaces in flood areas and set high standards in targeted areas with one foot requirements above the designated 100-foot flood plane for construction. The city has also tried to obtain certified points by implementing drainage in flood planes and by installing in-stalling flood warning devices in areas that would be hit first by flood waters, as is the case in Barton Creek. The device alerts the Davis County Sheriff's Department of potential floods coming into the community as proper authorities can be contacted and the general public can be warned. "The city should develop more measures to reduce the dangers of flooding on a scale of one to 10," he said. "If the rating is reduced, insurance premiums could be dropped as well."
