Show Region One Tennis Tournament By JOHN W. CANNON ROY-The Region One tennis championships were held in Roy last Thursday. Viewmont did very well and will advance all seven players to the State playoffs. Davis, on the other hand, was plagued with disasters and will advance only two players. In the first round for the number one seeds, Viewmont's Jay Hansen defeated Davis freshman Bobby Shepard. Shepard stepped in after the Davis number one player was ruled ineligible. Hansen went on to take third and advance to State. Dart Jon Rhodes took second, and Viking Matt Merback finished third in the singles second seed division. Dart Nate Smith finished second, and 9th grade Viking Jarod Gerradsaibara took fourth in the region third seeds. In doubles action Viewmont's Shane" Jarvis and Clay Ellison finished fin-ished second for the top seeds, and Tom Allen and Phil Johnson took second for the number two seeds. Bonniville finished first in every category and is the overall region champ. Viewmont came in second. Davis was ranked second coming into the tournament with a 5-1 , record, but basically fell apart. Said Davis Coach Russ Zaugg, "Our undefeated, top ranked doubles team was beaten in the first round by a team that had not won a match all year. It was just not a good day for us. " Zaugg is looking forward to next year, as all but two seniors will be back. "We should be fairly competitive com-petitive next year," he said. The Vikings, on the other hand, were all treated to breakfast by coach Jerry Waldvogel. "I promised prom-ised the kids that I would treat them all to breakfast if everyone qualified for state, and they did it. I'm very proud of them. This is the first time ever that all of our kids have qualified for state," said Waldvogel. T i i r t i ' : f ... f . - t i i ! r I 1 ' j J.
