Katharine Bagley Garff was appointed to the board by Gov. Norman H. Bangerter last week as a replacement for John M.R. Covey, who resigned from his term expiring Dec. 31, 1994. Garff has been involved in community service for a o'imber of years including the Parent Teachers Associa-on Associa-on program in elementary, junior high and high .hools and served as the PTA president of Woods Cross High School. She has volunteered in the Art Start, Music Start, Creative Writing and Gifted programs in elementary schools as well as serving on the Davis County School District Foundation Board and was a volunteer probation proba-tion officer in the Juvenile Court. Garff refused to state what topics she intends to address ad-dress primarily, stating that "she will first meet with the Davis County School District to establish some of their needs. "That's probably why the governor chose me. I'm really doing this from the point of view of the concerned concern-ed mother, as a volunteer. I'm not a representative of any organization so I think I'll be able to do a good job for our schools,' ' Garff explained. Garff attended her first board meeting last Friday, although al-though she will not be a voting member until she is confirmed by the Senate. "I have a lot to learn, but I'm really excited. I have always loved education and I feel I owe a lot to my community. My community has done a lot for my children," Garff explained. Garff and her husband, Robert H. Garff, live in Bountiful with their five children. |
