Show Tracksters compete Qat BYU Invitational By TOM HARALDSEN Clipper Correspondent PROVO Woods Cross was the top local team in both boys' and girls competition during dur-ing the annual BYU Invitational Prep Track and Field meet held Saturday in Provo. The meet serves as a preview of the state championships to be held on the Osame Cougar track May 15 and 16. The Wildcats finished seventh in boys' team scoring with 29 points. Cottonwood captured the title with 42 points. The Lady Wildcats were 11th with 18 points, far behind champion Mountain View's total of 59.5. Viewmont tied for 10th in boys' at 21, with Davis 12th at 20. Davis also took 16th in girls' with 12 points, while Viewmont and Bountiful tied for 34th with four points each. There was great local representation rep-resentation in the boys' decathalon and girls' heptathlon. In the decathalon, Bountiful's Phil Tate took a strong third with 5,939 points, behind the winner's total of 6,211. Woods Cross' Beau Etling was fifth with 5,765 points. Jodi Wimmer of Davis took sixth in the heptathlon hep-tathlon with 3,413 points, behind ! Pine View's Tiffany Lott, who won the event for the second straight year with 4,718 points. In boys' competition on the track, Dave Marx of Woods Cross captured the only local first place medal when he won the 400 meters in a time of 49.31. Second went to Bonneville's Bonne-ville's Mike Degroot at 49.95. Other top-eight finishers locally in running events included Jed Johansen of Viewmont, 8th in the 3200 (9:50.84); Pete Mc-Conkie Mc-Conkie of Woods Cross, 7th in 110 meter hurdles (16.69); Bryan Ashby of Woods Cross, 6th in the 100 meters (11.24); Scott Keate of Viewmont, 3rd in the 1600 meters (4:23.6); Davis' Greg Low, 7th in the 300 meter hurdles (41.0); Robert Holm an of Viewmont, 4th in the 800 meters (1:58.41); the Davis medley team of Jeff Peterson, Scott Thredgold, Glen Combe and Brett Thomas, 2nd place (3:34.85, just .83 behind first- SEE TRACK ON B-2 Track CONTINUED FROM B-l place Cottonwood); the Woods Cross 400 meter relay team of Marx, Ashby, McConkie and Beau Etling, 3rd place (43.55); and the Wildcats' 1600 meter relay, 2nd in 3:24.54, just behind Weber's 3:23.98. In field events, local placers included Jake Frodsham of Davis, 7th in the pole vault (13-3); David Blair and Kevin Brooke of Davis, 4th and 8th respectively in the discus (153-1 and 143-6); and Jed Florence of Viewmont, 5th in the shot put (50-10). The only local girls champions cham-pions were the Davis medley relay team of Kadee Wimmer, Jen Ence, Dayna Smith and Katie Rich ins, taking first in a time of 4:10.6. Others who plac ed locally included Kim Mar-chant Mar-chant of Viewmont, 8th in the 100 hurdles (16.6); Natalie Anderson of Woods Cross, who took 2nd in the 100 meters (12.43) and 200 meters (25.96); Sheryl Baker of Viewmont, 6th in the 200 meters (26.88); the Davis 400 meter relay team of Ence, Rich ins. Can Forsyth and Jodee Barrett, 7th. place (51.3); and the Woods Cross 1600 relay team of Anderson, Jenny Heap, Michelle Devey and Jenny Gerber,7th (4:13.60). In field events, the only local athlete to medal was Bountiful1 s Jenny Gardner, who tied for fourth in the high jump at 5-2. Next up are the Region One and Region Six meets, held respectively at Davis and Woods Cross this Wednesday and Thursday afternoons at 3:30 p.m. The season then culminates with qualifiers returning to Provo for state meets next week. |
