Show Writers invited to enter 34th competition The Literary Arts Program of the Utah Arts Council invites Utah writers to enter its 34th annual Utah Original Writing Competition. The program again seeks original, unpublished manuscripts of poetry, short fiction, novels, juv- residents may compete for recognition recogni-tion in seven categories: Class ANovel ($l,0OO$750); Class BNon-fiction Book, excluding biography and autobiography ($1,000$750); Class C Book-length Book-length Collection of Poetry ($1 ,000$750); Class DJuvenile Book ($500$300); Class ESerious Poetry ($5O0$3O0); Class FShort Story ($5OO$30O); and Class GPersonal Essay ($500$300). In addition, the $5,000 Publication Publica-tion Prize will be awarded for one of the winning book-length manuscripts from the 1991 competition. competi-tion. Only one entry may be submitted in each class by each competitor. First and second-place winners from last year's competition are not eligible for prizes in the categories in which they won, but they may enter works in other classes. One of the country's oldest such events for writers, the competition affords the Utah State Legislature, through the Utah Arts Council, the opportunity to honor those who achieve literary excellence and who, through their efforts, bring prestige and honor to the state. Over the last 33 years, winners of the competition have included such writers as Pulitzer Prize-winner poet Henry Taylor, nationally acclaimed accla-imed young-adult novelists Barbara Williams and AJane Ferguson, award-winning poets David Lee and Larry Levis and fiction writers Franklin Fisher, David Kranes and Margaret Young. First place cash awards to winners will range from $5,000 for the Publication Prizegiven for the most outstanding book-length work from the previous year's competi-tion-to $500 for the short story and personal essay prizes.
