Show -MtovHWWHMVBPMHHV Beach party set for Saturday 4 GREAT SALT LAKE Summer begins early at "The Great Salt Lake Beach Festival - Kites, Spike and Bite.' On Saturday, April 11, Salt air Beach will become a playground for volleyball players, kite flyers, frisbee-catching dogs, and those who enjoy being in the sun and playing in the sand. There is no cost to attend the festival. The festivities begin at 8 a.m. with a two-person sand volleyball tournament, said Great Salt Lake State Park ranger John Ibach. Teams can preregister for $30, or register the day of the event for $35. Cash prizes will be awarded and all participants will receive a T-shirt. To register call the park at 533-4081, 533-4081, or Salt Lake Parks and Recreation at 972-7800. Dogs will take center stage on the beach from 12-2 p.m. at the "Come N Get It' K9 Frisbee Contest. "This free contest is open to all dogs with leap catching ability," Ibach said. Prizes will be awarded. At 2 p.m. attention will turn from frisbee catching to kite flying. "We encourage anyone interested in kite flying, to bring their kites out and fly them," Ibach said. A portion of the beach will be reserved for those who want to fly for fun, while another an-other portion will be set aside for kite flying competitions. Prizes will be awarded in the kite flying competitions and there is no registration fee. A kite candy drop will be held for kids and Air Apparent-Kites will have a booth set up to display its latest kite designs. For spectators, a fun day of sun and sand playing awaits. "We're anticipating fair weather for the event, which means it will probably be windy," Ibach said. "People will need to dress appropriately. ' ' Sal fair Beach facilities include picnic tables, rest rooms and drinking drink-ing water. Food and beverages will be available for purchase. "All proceeds pro-ceeds from the sale of food and drinks will be donated to the homeless," Ibach said. The event is co-sponsored by Air Apparent-Kites v Great Salt Lake State Park, KCPX K-98.7 FM, Pepsi Pep-si Cola Co., Salt Lake City Parks and Recreation, and Salt Lake County Animal Services. To reach Saltan Beach, travel 16 miles west of Salt Lake City, on 1-80, and exit on Exit 104. Make a right turn off the off-ramp, and take another right turn at the stop sign.
