Show 4A track: Davis, Viewmont looking good Editor's Note: This is the second of two articles previewing local prep track and field teams. Today, a look at Da via and Viewmont in Region 1. B(v TOM HARALDSEN Clipper Correspondent In the past five years, Davis and Viewmont have figured prominently promi-nently in 4A track and field championships, cham-pionships, the Darts having won two championships while the Vikes have finished in the top two several times. So what does this year hold for these two long-time rivals? Here's a look: At Viewmont High, coaches Corey Swenson and Alisa Wise have taken over the reins. And as always, the Vikes promise to be tough in distances and pole vault. If the other track and field events jell, the Vikes could be in for a great season. All-world senior Scott Keate anchors an-chors the strong distance contingent that includes Dane Miller, Jeremy Call and Phil Stoddard as well. In the middle distance races, Viewmont View-mont will also count on Paul Servey, Steve Miller and Chris Spendlove. Viewmont should also enjoy success in the sprints from Mark Higbee, Robert Holman, Ashley Petty, Eric Holje, Clayton Maybe, J.J. Merrill, James Gamer and Spendlove. Hurdlers will include Andy Pack and Higbee, along with Jason Uffers, Mike Izatt and Jared Martin. In the field events, Jeremy Baird and Pete Mudrow will throw the javelin; Jed Florence, Wyatt Diler, Dallas Tuttle and Travis Remington will throw the shot and discus, Uffers and Jeremy Martine will long jump; Uffers, Baird and Travis Bilanzich will high jump, and the pole vault will feature region champ Brock Seeley along with Bilanzich, Hans Jenkins and Brett Christian. The Lady Vikes have several top returners this season, including Kim March ant in the hurdles and jumps, and Jenny Wadley and Windy Hut-chings Hut-chings in the 400 and 800 meters (Hutchins will also high jump). Sprinters for Viewmont will include in-clude Alicia Pitt, Tiffany McKay, Bethany Isom and Sheryl Baker. Alisha Edison will run the hurdles, and Melahn Atkinson, Heather Holman, Allison Rosenlund and JoLynn Hogge will run nvddle distance; Tanette McKenzie and Ashley Martin will throw the discus and shot, and Pitt, March an; and McKay will long jump. In Kaysville, Davis High coaches Roger Burley and Judy Allen also welcome back some experienced athletes and look forward to ii successful suc-cessful 1992 campaign. Top returners for the boys include in-clude sprinter Scott Threadgold, who medaled at the Simplot Indoor Games in Idaho in February; distance stars Glen Combe, Robert Hunter, Jared Allen and Mike Sherman, and hurdler Corbett Carver. Joining them will be sprinters Brian Barckley, '".yan Hibler and Jeff Peterson; Brett Thomas and Greg Low in the 400, Mike Hirst and Nathan BrinU a in the 800; David Blair, Mark Fai f Tim Anders and Kevin BrookiS the shot and discus; David Isaacson, Nate Taylor, Mike Dawson and Kyle Rigby in the jumps, and oolaS vaulters Ryan Smith, Mark CalviiJ Jake Frodsham and Mike Petersen. Joining Carver in hurdles wiii be Matt Thomas, Curtis Maxfield and Tyler Knudsen. The Lady Darts will be faster than during the past two years, with sprinters Jenny Ence, Carrie TJyer, Katie Richins, Kristy Tew am1 Kari Forsyth leading the way. These same ladies will make up relay teams for Davis, which should be big point-getters this spring. In the 800 and 1600 meters, former state champ Dayna Smith is back once again to lead Davis. Kadee Wimmer will be tough in the 400 meters for the Lady Darts, while middle and long distance standouts should include Lisa Hart and sophomores Brichelle Flint and Lindsey Wagner. Hurdles will be run by Brooke McFarland and Wimmer. Field event stars include Nicole Scott in the shot, discus and high jump; Jodi Wimmer , Jodee Barrett and Donna Thorsen in the javelin; Richins in the high jump and Forsyth For-syth in the long jump. One of the highlights of track season is the annual Davis High Invitational In-vitational for 4A schools, slated for April 24-25 in Kaysville. |
