Show Board continues to pray BRIGHAMCITY The Box Elder Board of Education has no plans to change its policy on prayer. Superintendent Steven Laing indicated that both he and the board president Shirlene Peck have discussed the issue and are taking a wait and see attitude. "We'd like to see something more definitive before we change what we've been doing since time immemorial," he said. In the wake of a recent ruling which imposed a court-ordered ban on prayer . in Salt Lake City council meetings, some communities in the state are concerned about how they will be affected. A few have shelved the practice pending a more conclusive legal decision. The Salt Lake City council has since voted to appeal the ban imposed im-posed March 4 by 3rd District Court Judge J. Dennis Frederick. The case will now go to the Utah Supreme Court However, following the ruling, the Society of Separationists sent out over 270 letters to local governments requesting that prayer be ceased in their meetings. The society has threatened to take legal action against anyone who fails to comply. "I've read about the letters and heard about them on the electronic media," said Superintendent Laing, "but we haven't received one yet." |
